Title: Naked to Faired - Race Fairings for Street?
Post by: cboling on April 19, 2010, 03:42:48 PM
I have read many posts where others have installed race fairings and such as opposed to staying naked. My 96 is naked but "IF" I decide not to sell it, I have been thinking about adding some race style fairings and going for a cool graphics / paint design. I have seen some posts in the race section where others have fitted race fairings designed for other bikes (R6, GSXR, KTM, etc....) and I was wondering how those are attached. Did they simply have to fabricate brackets for the upper and lower fairings? If anyone has made their own fairing brackets and clamps, what has worked the best? Also, if you go with a different type of bike fairing, what considerations do you have to take for the different sizes of bike?

It has to remotely be close to fitting or you have to make it fit. The brackets they come with, if any, are your guide for rebuilding/making brackets to fit. I would want GSF brackets as well to make hybrid brackets.

I would go with aftermarket that is meant for the bike if I were doing that and didnt want to stop at a small cafe fairing. I always wanted to spiff up an older bike with airtech. I heard only OK things about them, i.e. some negs and some just OKs. They are not cheap.

I think this bike would be nice with raw aluminum aero tank like an old NSU. That would cost more than the bike though.

I think the hardest part would be the upper fairing. You'd probably have to get a tab welded to the front of your frame to mount it, and you'd have to come up with a pretty sturdy bracket for that one. The rest you could just make some smaller brackets and mount them to your frame with either some Rivnuts, welded on tabs if you know how, or make some kind of brackets that actually wrap around the frame and clamp on. Other than that you'd want to try to find some that are pretty skinny. GSXR fairings from 96-2003 would be the wrong way to go. Maybe some R6 or cbr600rr might look ok as those bikes look pretty slim. I think if you tried to put on a modern front fairing you'd want to update the rear as well. The newer style tanks are a lot wider, and would help with a larger fairing looking in proportion too.
