Hi Guys, sorry I haven't posted an introduction and just started with a question but I've been lurking here for a while.
This morning on my 93 GS500 it wouldn't start, the starter spins but makes quite a weird noise, almost like it's straining or whining. I thought I had left the lights on all night.
Finally bump started it and road 25 miles to work.
Got to work, switched it off and tried starting it again knowning battery would be charged from the ride. Nothing, same thing, whirring noise as it tries to start but won't actually.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Some keywords to search:
Starwalts (not likely)
Goats (probably not)
Starter clutch (most likely)
If there is no other nasty noises or electrical issues I would start with the starter-clutch. They wear and can suffer if the oil is not regularly changed. However in addition to the above list a faulty starter-motor is also a possibility. Brushes and bearings can wear particularly if your bike has seen some serious use.
Starter clutch overhaul kits are available but you will also need a case gasket and some fresh oil and a filter:thumb:

Thanks for the replies.
Went down and tried it again at lunch time, it tries to catch for a half second then just makes a horrible whining noise.
If I keep trying despite the whining then it finally catches and starts.
Does that shed any more light on wether starter or the start clutch?
starter clutch prolly

HI guys, im ordering this tonight, what gasket will I need? Haynes is in the shed!
Good morning guys, an update on this.
I ordered the correct gasket and starter clutch rebuild kit, along with new filter and oil ready to do this.
When down to the bike this morning and tried cranking it again, sounds like battery is really weak but I know it's not.
Kept cranking in short bursts and smelt burning. Tiny wisp of smoke came out from under the seat, checked the battery and negative wire was very hot along with negative terminal so it's obviously getting overloaded somewhere.
I think I may be looking at a failed or siezed starter...? Anyone concur?

Hi again.
Yesterday the gasket and other corresponding parts arrived including the starter clutch repair kit.
Today I got down to it and replaced the starter clutch weights, springs and plungers. I think that was definitely the problem as when I took the flywheel(with the magnets) off one of the weights literally dropped out on it's own accord.
One thing I note is the plungers used to hold the weights in were ALL metal
The quality replacements i've purchased have a rubber end on them, could this help avoid the issue in future I wonder?
I have a couple important questions though regarding this before I put the side cover back on.1. The epoxy on the end of the magnets was loose/falling off so I peeled it off (literally just fell away from the ends) but they still seem tight and held very firmly. Should I worry about goats?
2. I hear everyone having real trouble getting the generator/flywheel off... I didn't, I undid the big bolt (which was in tight) and pulled it off, no hassle. Does that mean something was wrong if I could pull it off with ease?
All the best, and thanks.
PS. Will gladly post pictures shortly, but be warned she's a workhorse rather than a looker.
