Title: front brake calipers
Post by: pandymai on April 25, 2010, 06:06:00 PM
are the front brake calipers interchangeable through all model years?

i read that the new 04+ calipers are 4 piston calipers (meaning better, more dependable?) and wanted to know if i could install in onto my 89. im gonna need to change the pads and rotor soon, just thought maybe i'd go for a better setup all together if possible.

question also continues into rotor selection.. haha are the rotors (front and rear) also interchangeable through all model years?

the bolt size on the newer models are thicker, so that alone would need addressed.  other than that, idk

the newer front calipers are 2 piston sliding like the old ones, but of a better design. actually the new calipers are exactly the same as sv650 front calipers just made (cheaper) by another company (sv650 has tokiko. gs500f has AJP), they are interchangable. but I dont know if the calipers will swap from old design to new design, I do know the rotors are different but same diameter.

the wheels are the same for all years but the forks were changed along with the new calipers. I *think* the new rotor will bolt directly on, and I *think* the new caliper will fit on the old forks with very minimal modification.

the rear brakes however are the same for all years of gs500's.

I havent tried the old setup (my 07 obviously came with the newer, better brakes stock) But I have heard the new brakes have better feel and slightly more braking power over the old ones.
