I'm 20 years old and just bought my first bike, so i don't know a whole lot about them, Ive never worked on one or even rode one. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and can fix most things however i am lost at this point. its an 02 gs500 with 15k miles on it. it was running fine when i bought it but after a few days of running it the bike wouldn't start. i pulled the plugs and noticed they were carbon fouled, i replaced them and the bike started right up. after only a few more times of running the bike it wont start again. i pulled the new plugs and they are carbon fouled as well... WHAT DO I DO??'
this is very very frustrating and not knowing what to do is driving me crazy. any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Hank
sounds like your carbs need to be adjusted as the bike is probably running really rich from the sound of your plugs.
Does it have the stock filter and pipe?
Next question being what jets are in the carbs (you will need to remove the carbs from the bike and open them up to tell this but it is alot easier than it sounds, their are little tiny numbers stamped into the top of the jets)?
the PO might have had a stock pipe and filter in and rejetted for that setup but returned them back to stock to sell them but never readjusted the carbs so they are running rich. That is where i would start.
its got a k&n filter, which i already cleaned. it does have the stock pipe but id like to replace it soon, ill try and take the carbs off when i get home from class... i worked a little on a katana before i traded it for the gs( the katana didnt run) and i cleaned the carbs on that but didnt rejet or anything like that... is it hard to do? would you recomend taking to a pro or tackling it myself?
thank for the help
also it needs a cam chain tensioner? that wouldnt affect this problem would it?
Tackling the carbs yourself is an easy task. Just make sure to take you time and take pictures to remember where everything goes back.
I don't know about the cam chain tensioner question.
alright ill give it a shot lol
thank you
