the newer style tank does fit the older bikes. the differences are, it doesn't have the small mounts for the rear fairings, and you would need to trim the little triangle from the front of the seat. the other mounts on my rear fairings were in good shape, so MINE didn't flop around or anything. it also holds a little more fuel. since being newer, they would be less likely to be rusted on the inside
