Title: Battery / RegRec problems
Post by: AndyB on October 22, 2003, 01:38:52 AM
The GS has been a bit sluggish lately but I put it down to the cold, until I had to bump start the bike last night, battery not flat but only just enough power to turn over.

Load test at battery gives 13v at idle and drops to 12.5v at 5000rpm

Got the manual out and checked generator, no shorts and 75+V ac @ 5000rpm so that looks OK

Reg/Rec tested OK except between black and red (the separate plug) which read 15ohms when the manual states 40ohms.

I've had a VFR reg/rec die but it gave no charge at all, so am I seeing a reg/rec on its last legs?

Its an '89 with 48K and an ex-training school bike (I work there part time so I got it for peanuts).

Could I just try the reg/rec first or should I spend the cash and get a new battery as well?

Cheers
Andy
Title: Reg...

OK make sure the alternator is ok between each coil... and ground... 2.2 ohms between each or somehting and none have continuity to ground...
Battery is considered a perishable... so I wait for them to actually die.. They die often enough IMHO. Replace the Reg and should be OK.
Cool.

To trouble shoot your charging system download this guide from this Electrex website --- very handy to work out where the problem may be (sometimes it is just a bad connector easily fixed with some cleaning)

Good luck
