Title: strange sound & weird throttle response
Post by: nitehawk on May 27, 2010, 05:24:11 PM
Ok so i bought my bike for 200 bucks they said it might have a broken rod, i tore it apart to see if i could replace it. but i found no problems.

I read somewhere that the noise i was hearing was probably cam end float.

so i put the bike back together, just got it running and now its still got the noise, but thats not what concerns me as much as the smoke coming from the front of the exhaust.

its a white smoke btw.

After running for about 20 seconds or so it will start to smoke where the exhaust connects to the head.

I have oil in the engine, i just put new in.

heres a vid of me running the bike idle. you can hear the noise from the engine and maybe see the smoke but i dont think its enough to be able to see it on camera.

Video hasn't processed yet, will link when its ready

then i thought i would ride the bike around the block to just see if it needed to warm up.

i rode it up to the stop sign and the throttle sounded like it got stuck because it started idling really high. then i rode it about 100 yards again and it did the same thing even when i stopped and let off the throttle it just kept revved really high and i killed it.

any thoughts?

Exhaust leak, maybe.  Did you replace the gaskets when you put it back together?

And you have "hanging idle".  Search for that term.

i didnt put the new gaskets on the exhaust part because they were stuck and didnt think it would be a big deal.

i will google that term.

Hey, at least you knew there even WERE exhaust gaskets.  That's better than half of folks, God bless 'em.
Saw a tiny puff of smoke in the video, but the camera was moving too much to see where it was from.

Almost looked like it came from under the valve cover gasket.  But, that's just silly.

How's your compression?

lol ya it was hard to recognize them though!

i'm not 100% on what the compression is. autozone didnt have the right fitting so i couldnt get an accurate reading

How much are they renting them for?  I'll sell you better quality test kit with the right fitting.
Has 2 extras, fits my Scion and my wife's Blazer.
Rubber gauge housing, so you don't whack your tank when you're trying to hold the clutch AND starter AND the gauge.

When you're done with it, sell it to the next guy.
Better than the junk they're renting out to every other guy, filled up with carbon from 20 gazillion cycles.

update

so i replaced the exhaust gaskets, and the smoke went away. dunno if it was that or after idling for a while it burned off the junk.

I adjusted the pilot screws all day, and finally got it to almost quit with the hanging idle. so i think i just need to keep messing with it till i get the perfect mixture setting.

i did manage to break my shift lever off in the process though! soooooo anybody know any good aftermarket ones? cuz i dont really wanna spend 35 bucks for the OEM piece of crap. it was just the foot peg part so i thought about jerry rigging it with a bolt or something...sounds safe, right?

yep I had that issue with the idle as well. I've gotten rid of most of it but it does go a little higher than usual sometimes. I could keep fiddling with it but it's not as high as before so I've stopped fiddling with the carbs

I've done that before as a temp solution, go ahead and do it while you actively search for a good part.  as many bikes are being parted out on here, someone should have one
