Title: Idleing problems.
Post by: Lockem on October 23, 2003, 12:41:07 PM
What does it mean if the engine starts idleing at around 3000 rpm
after driving for a while (Choke is off).
It starts normally idleing around 1200- 1500
all the sudden starts idleing very high and takes a while for the rpm's to go down.
The Petcock is on Prime, air filter has been changed very recently.
Etc..
Anyone has any ideas?

Another question i have is about the fuel petcock changing.
Does the fact that the fuel is being gravity fed and not vacuum fed
Have any effect on the global preformance of the engine?

Thanks
Title: 1200 when cold and 3K when hot...

If it idles at 3K when hot, and 1200 when cold... its lean at idle.
However if it idles at 3K at random and drops slowly to 1200 or some like that... The throttle cable or choke cable are getting pulled and are making it act like that. Mine was choke, Gino's bike was throttle, make sure they are adjusted to have a bit of free play in them.
Gravity fed... you mean a 1 petcock setup with a gravity fed one form the tank... if you dont foget to close the thing, and figure out how to switch to reserve etc cos its hard to get at from where its on the frame... Then nothing wrong with it. Make sure you cap off the vaccum spigot on your carbs.
Cool.

First, Thanks for the extremly fast answer..
In case it's Lean Idle What do i need to do to fix it?

And What do you mean by capping off the vacuum pigot?

Oh, Is it important to change the petcock setting from Prime To on or Res When the bike is off?
If so why will it matter?
(Forgive my ignorance... I'm pretty new to the field)
Title: Prime is bad...
Post by: The Buddha on October 23, 2003, 01:16:15 PM
Prime bypasses vacuum.. So the petcock will let fuel into the carbs without engine running... so the pressure of fuel could push open the float valves, and fill the carbs, and let fuel into the airbox and engine... As a liquid in the engine gas will not ignite and will not compress and when you start the bike... the bike will hydrolock and its like the motor suddenly has not 9:1 compression but more like 15:1 or more... depending on the quantity of gas in the chamber... and that might break a connecting rod. Bad... but common... seen it happen on many bikes.
Cool.

So what do i do if it's the lean problem?

And what part of the accel cable should i lubricate if that's the problem?

You need to add 40 pilots to your carbs.
I am doing this in the next week because I have this same stupid high idle(3k rpms) when coming to a stop.

Title: Not exactly...

Well not exactly add... You replace the 37.5's in your stock carbs with 40's. However Just for idle I wont do this. I have been able to get the bike to idle right by air screw alone. Open the air screws 1/2 a turn. The bike has them set at 2 1/2 stock... Try 3, then 3.5... and so on... I personally will set it as much as 5 turns out if it will take care of the problem. Having said that only 1 bike I have worked on ran fine with just air screw set to 4.5. If your bike also has that annoying weak spot right when trying to take off from a stop... Then you need 40 pilots. Yea most likely you need 40's but not always. Also if your brass caps on the air screws aren't drilled out... might as well put 40's in it... cos those caps have to come off to adjust the air screws and for that the carbs need to come off and get the caps drilled out.

make sure your bar-ends arent on too tight...my bike came with aftermarket bar ends and the throttle would stick sometimes and the bike would rev....try loosening a little before playing with carbs...
