Every time I look at my bike something is missing, broken, or leaking. >:(
Decided to check the valves today since the head gasket is leaking.
Pulled the fuel lines off the tank and noticed that both the primary and reserve lines were leaking (I thought I was smelling gas lately...)
Two of the bolt o-rings for the cover were deformed (fortunately had already purchased spares...)
Spent four hours working and searching for fuel lines...put everything back together...bike started OK (as usual)..decided to wash it. Noticed that the right front suspension yellow reflector is broken off. >:( How the hell does that break? I haven't dropped the bike and it "used" to be there.
Two of the four lens covers on the speedometer assembly fell off this year. I watched the oil pressure lens cover fly past my helmet as I rode down the highway.
The headlight switch broke.
One of the headlight mounting bolts fell off.
THIS BIKE HAS 6,000 MILES ON IT!!
It has never left me stranded...It always starts...but dang it, it's nickel and dime-ing me to death.
Is this normal? My '02 model appears to be one of the first years the bike was built in Spain. The Suzuki plant must have started the random drug testing policy in '03.
PS...does anyone know the part number for the right hand side front reflector bracket? According to bike bandit I think it is either 494475-001 or 494498-001
I think most of the rubber tubing is meant to be replaced every 4 years reguardless of how many miles are on it so its no surprise that the fuel lines are leaking. You might want to check the brake lines as well.
Heh...my Japanese made '92 is using the original fuel lines with no clamps, seals tight like a tigah...
My 91' is holding up well too. The only thing I lost is that little cover for the clutch adjuster screw on the outside of the sprocket cover, but that was my fault because I forgot to tighten the screws before I went for a ride. Other than that your bike must just hate you.
One of those yellow front side reflectors fell off on my 97 GS years ago and I replaced it. Then the other one fell off and I unbolted both brackets and threw them away. When one fell off on my 02 GS I threw them both away again. Problem solved. Poor design on that mounting bracket stamping I think and they break off running from vibration thru the right angle bend in them.
Rubber tubing, brake lines? I've never replaced any of them on any of my 6 bikes; 4 Hondas and then the 2 GS500s. Put 80k miles on my 97 GS and just arrived at 80k miles on my 02 GS and expecting 100k with no further serious problems or even much in the way of minor ones. The 97 was totalled at about 80k miles and I bought the 02.
Replace tubing and brake lines every 4 years? Now ya tell me. :icon_lol:
I always thought the 04 GSF models were the 1st GSs assembled in Spain and assumed my 02 was made in Japan, think I would have noticed if it wasn't. I'll check it again later today if the rain stops and I go over to the garage assuming I can remember where the garage is. :thumb:

My front brake caliper fell off one day not too long ago while riding because I forgot to tighten it. I blamed it on memory loss due to advancing age, what's your excuse? :icon_lol:

tigah, and gs in the same thought - LOL again :-)
almost all the assorted problems on my 96 were user-induced, well, all except for the bike shop that didn't install my rear brake caliper bolts.... and that was my fault for not checking after having new tars put on.
i'd expect quality to slide for any product that goes from one country of origin to another. you know, all those folks that learned the right way to do things on the production/assemly line are immediately lost. methods forgotten, etc.

Afterbooster replaced with stick-on Harley reflectors that don't cost much and look quite good. I haven't gotten my tuit round, but it's on my list. The originals seem to have fallen off mine long before I ever got it.
...Harley Shop and order a set of replacement fork reflectors for a Dyna Wide Glide.
Part numbers:
59481-00 & 59482-00 Cost about $6 each.

Yeah, I don't get that. I've read the service manual that suggests replacing every four years. But...if any of us walked into a Kia dealership and were told that all rubber lines and hoses on their cars should be replaced every four years we would leave that dealership laughing.

That's the impression I'm getting.

That's a great idea, thanks.
Since the closest dealership to my house mostly sells Harley's I should identify every part that has a HD equivalent.
Locktite is your friend.
My '08 is from Spain. It has not Harlied any parts, yet.

So you got the "Harley Tuned" edition with 9x more vibrations!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking! This is the worst GS horror story I've ever read. It sounds like he has an old shovel head! :2guns:
As for rubber lines, we seem to be in two groups and I think it's climate related. Some of us in hot and dry places need to replace rubber lines every handful of years. The rest of us never do. My '94 has all original lines as far as I can tell and nothing's leaking yet.
As for side reflectors, could someone please explain to me their purpose? If you're crossing an intersection while someone else is running the red light does anyone think that reflector will help you in any way? He may see you for an instant before he takes you from this Earth but other than that I'm stumped.
The reflectors I'm pretty sure at least in Florida are a state requirement. I know on the back they are.
I was looking for those reflectors last year DOD and I couldn't find that stinking thread to save my life! Thought they looked pretty slick myself.

I searched for it myself a while ago, and ended up posting a request for some help finding it - it seems to be in a black hole from the search engine point of view.
Reflectors?! I see em on cars, lol.
