Title: New 07 GS
Post by: marcusk on June 07, 2010, 03:39:17 PM
Hello all .. I have just bought an 07 Gs 500F with 17000 Km on the clock.  Is there anything that I should be looking at ASAP with a bike of this vintage? I have already got it earmarked for an oil and filter change and a new pair of iridium plugs ?  It will need a new front soon and the rear is almost new i dont know if i need to adjust the clutch as it is you are at almost 3/4 released before the bike moves away. Also it is idling at just under 1k is this to low the bike has not been run properly for about 2 months (just enough to keep charge in the battery ) with new fuel and a good run do you think this will improve ?? before i go fiddling with things ?

adjust warm idle to around 1200
check the fuel and brake lines for wear

do you have any info on previous maintenance?

The last owner has lost the books so I have no documented evidence of maintenance but he said that he took it to the dealer for a service about a month ago but the dealers here in Brisbane are a bit hit and miss.  Dose the GS dirty it oil quickly?   i got the bike for a good price about 2 k under what the dealers sell a similar bike for so i dont mind spending a couple of bucks to get her ship shape.

i wouldnt imagine the oil getting dirtier than any other vehicle, generally about 3000 miles it would be darker than new. if it's really dark/smoke out the tail pipe than you know there's an issue there.
and i would say check the valve clearances and float heights as well
