Has anyone tryed to change the manual choke to an auto?
I started my bike this morning as usual, and went into the house to grab my helmet and gloves. I got side tracked by my wife asking me about something to do with my kids :dunno_black:...so we talked about it for what seemed like 2 mins, probably 5...when I went back out to my bike, it was revving away at 4500ish rpm :mad:...not the best for a cold engine, althought it wasn't cold anymore...lol :thumb:
I might have to look into whether there is a kit or not. :icon_idea:
The gs500 choke doesnt have any throttle blades like a car/old-bike carb. It opens another fuel passage that lets in a very rich afr mix, it would be hard to make it automatic with out an electronic servo to pull the plungers and a temp sensor. At least hard for me.
that would be way more complicated than just getting a FI bike. I didn't even know they made automatic chokes. That's interesting though. I assume they're more common on cars?
My choke doesn't even work at the moment. I've gotta turn my idle up, and then keep turning it down slowly as the bike warms up.
Right now I just ride for fun, so it doesn't matter, but someday when I move out of the city and need a way to get myself to work I'll probably buy another bike for commuting(won't be for years so I'm assuming ahead of time that I won't have the GS anymore). I love the idea of the first generation SV650Ss for a daily all weather commuter, but if it's primarily used as a commuter I don't want to deal with the choke. 3/4 of the year wouldn't matter, but those last couple weeks before winter and the first couple weeks before spring when it's freezing out in the morning I want something that I can just start and let warm up by itself while I wait inside where it's warm.
Yes auto chokes are the norm on carbs cars made after 1960.
Running at 4K RPM isn't really a problem for a bike, and it was idling that high because it already started to warm up. No biggie. Dude... Don't let your bike sit 'warming up.' When you're ready to ride, throw the choke on, give it 5 seconds, and ride.
Installing an automatic choke would be non-trivial. AFAIK, they aren't made for bikes.

The Buell blast has an automatic choke. I haven't looked much into how it works but its something to think about. I'm pretty sure my zuma had one too. They are pretty common but as far as retro-fitting one you are on your own
my bike has automatic choke, I start it, put on my helmet, hop on and automatically take the choke off, lol
