OK title says it all... anyone know. Bad regulator???
Thanks.

I'd check what the voltage is with the bike off but the ignition still switched so that the headlight is on. If it's really low you'd know you have a bad battery... Which might be due to a dying alt/gen. I don't know if that would help you narrow it down at all.

I would check the AC output from the stator first before writing off the regulator.

Battery got ~13+ volts...
And about testing the alternator coils and testing the regulator one prong to another and testing the various directions etc etc... Yea I'd do that... but see I have what I believe is a perfectly good reg on the 91... drop that in the 89 (the trouble bike) and see what it does... yea why really analyse stuff when its easier to swap parts... of course if I had to pay for it... I'd do it different... BUt I believe I managed 41K out of the original reg in the 89... so maybe its gone... But I have never dont anything bad to it... like run the bike on a bad battery. Old battery... yes... bad... never.
Cool.

:)  Spare regulator (or swap) works too. Most people don't have spares of things like that or other similar models from which to borrow them from.

I was hoping someone would tell me yes that happened to them and it was a regulator. Before I swap it and try.
Cool.

I have a good regulator, but it delivers less power after 5000 rpm. I noticed this with my heated grips. they get very warm if I keep the rpms at ~4000, but after 5000 there seems so go less power to them.

I think that the regulator isn't a high quality piece that isn't able to regulate the higher voltages while keeping the amps up too.

I've got exactly the same problem - posted it last week - 89 with 48K.

Red - Black resistance off the reg (2wire plug) is 15 ohmns and the book says 40.

I've just ordered a new reg and bat but they won't arrive for a couple of days yet.  Interested to know what the resistance is on a good reg.

i had the same problem, and a new(second hand) regulator fixed it
dunno what it costs in the US but a new one would cost me 270euro here
and a second hand was 40 euro
