Title: spare engine for 2001-2002 GS500 ?
Post by: serge on June 14, 2010, 01:12:23 PM
Hello, I saw 2001 GS500 being sold for $600 with engine problem which was diagnosed as "spun bearings" (apparently without taking the engine apart). I was wondering if it would make sense to try to find spare engine for it ?  I understood that only 2001 2002 will fit?

I appreciate any advise on this. I am in Sacramento area.

as far as i know 89-10 will all fit.  will need wiring harness if its not the same yr as yours just to make sure all connection hook up  but everything should fit and work fine.

There are a few minor engine differences.

Newer bikes don't drive the tachometer off the camshaft. Easily rectified by buying a plug from one of the early GS500F engines.
Newer bikes have an oil cooler. I'm not sure if the fittings are different on these models.
