Title: Engine Rattle/Tick
Post by: cnewman on June 15, 2010, 07:08:14 PM
So I am a newbie to the motorcycle world and just bought a 2004 GS500F from a buddy.  About a month after I bought it I brought it into the dealer to get the valves adjusted and changed the oil and oil filter myself (got the oil and oil filter from the dealer).  A little bit after that I started to notice a little ticka ticka sound coming from somewhere around the engine.  It only occurs around 3,000-3,500 rpms and for only about two or three seconds, then it stops.  Sounds like  tickticktick.....tick....ticktick...tickticktick..., just really sporadic.  Oh, I also dumped it shortly after I started hearing the tick sound (it was a slow dump, foot slid on my gravel out as I was backing it up a slight incline, slowly started to fall over and finally went down as I couldn't keep my footing)  The weird part is it only happens around 3,000 to 3,500 rpms and only after it has been substantially warmed up (10-15 minutes of actual riding.)  I took it into the dealer and they rechecked their valve job, which were still in spec.  The dealer said they couldn't locate the noise on the top end of the engine and are currently going to check the bottom end.  I have been looking through a lot of these posts and some seemed similar but they all had the ticking sound at idle.  It is really weird how it only happens after it gets warmed up and only around 3,000-3,500 rpms (or thats at least when it is the most audible, I think i can faintly here it at idle after a long ride).  Any suggestions on what it could be?  Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

newbie

It could be an exhaust leak, they can get better or worse with temp. you might try tightening the exhaust header bolts, and checking for holes/cracks in the exhaust.

You might try applying the correct amount of torque to the exhaust header bolts.. as over tightening them (snapping them off) can have serious repercussions.

I have found that the whole front fairing, particularly the windshield can get a little bit loose and then it will make a sort of rattling type noise at specific rpm.  Don't know if this is what is happening to you or not but might be something to look at.
