Bike is running normally, but now I'm smelling a strong smell of gasoline in the exhaust. I still have to pull off the carbs to drill out and clean the idle jets one of these days, but I'm figuring my idle mixture screws are out too far?

Probably not, if they are still under the factory plugs. I would suspect a dirt particle holding open one of the float needles, a worn float needle, hanging choke (but, then performance would be affected...somewhat), or a leaky choke plunger.
Could also be that you're smelling gas on the exhaust.
Well - the reason I'm thinking it's a richness issue and not a flow issue is because with extra gas from a stuck float, wouldn't the RPMs rise abnormally?
I had to do a full carb clean to get 4 years worth of gas lacquer off - but the idle mixture screws I do have access to, not the jets - it's warmer now and it is possible that given the heat it simply doesn't need so much fuel? I've been scratching my head, it's not very pleasant at lights.
