Title: Help me Identify Signal Generator and Rotor
Post by: TheRealSpinner on June 16, 2010, 09:24:27 AM
I have an 89 GS500 and want to advance my timing, but I have replaced a few important parts before I realized they might be different because I live in California.

I replaced my ECU with one from Florida, so that means that it should be a 12 to 40 degree advancer.
I also replaced my Signal Generator, but don't remember where that came from.
I don't think that I replaced the Rotor.

Can anybody help me identify which model Signal Generator and Rotor I have and how far to advance either the Rotor or the Signal Generator.

I'd post pictures, but can't figure out how.
The Signal Generator is engraved: JAPAN PU 62 and it is stamped in ink: 8F 1 2
The Rotor is engraved: R TIIF     01D1     L TI     5-35

Thanks in advanced

Let's try this.  I just started a photobucket, so
here is the Signal Generator: (http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af9/TheRealSpinner/DSC03709small.jpg)

No, I understand HOW to advance my timing.  I'm just wonering how MUCH to advance it.  Do I advance it 5 degrees, or 17 degrees?  Because I have a CA Bike, it came stock with a 5 degree advance, and therfore would want to be advanced 17 degrees instead of the non-CA bikes that start at 12 degrees BTDC and only want an additional 5 degrees.  Since I got a new Signal Generator, I don't know if I got a CA replacement or a non-CA replacement, that is what I was looking for an answer to.

OK, so I found the receipt for the Signal Generator ($145.95 OUCH!).  It is a non-CA model, so that fits with my non-CA ECU.  Now, the only thing left is the CA rotor.  Should I try to find a non-CA rotor and then advance the Signal Generator (or the new rotor) 5 degrees, or keep the current rotor and advance a different amount?
