Title: dyno run today
Post by: gregvhen on June 19, 2010, 10:40:36 PM
ran my mechanically stock 96 E today. 35. 18 horse: 23.50 torque.  now this winter ill put on an exhaust filter and jets and test again...if its free again.  Harley by me was having a big event and did free dyno runs all day. If anyones interested i also ran:

2005 ninja 250 - 27 horse (dont have torque reading)
1989 ninja 600 - 54 horse (also no torque reading)
2004 Rebel 250 - 16 horse: 12 torque

yes, thats an 89 not a typo.  the reason there no torque reading for the ninjas is cause the guy didnt want to remove the plastic to attach the equipment since there was a line and it was free.

where did you find this exhaust filter?  was it cheap?  I have a lunchbox and aftermarket pipe on mine, so I should be well into the 50 hp range right?

what is wrong with your bike?
35 is weak for a stock bike.

glad you had fun at the dyno though.

no i was sayin, ill put on an exhaust, a new air filter, and rejet lol, not an exhaust filter.  and i dont know if youd run 50 hp, but it should be above 40, mines actually short about 5 horse. at least thats what ive read before. that stock gs makes 40

yea, not quite sure why its low.  i know its clean on the inside, and the carbs are all clean, its not runnin super rich or super lean. gearing is stock. valve clearence is good all the way around.

a good condition gs500 will make 39whp stock, thats what mine made with 3000ish miles on the odometer. with a lunch box and full exhaust and correct jets it should make 41-42whp. then with +5-6* timing it should make 43-44whp.
My 07 made 39whp stock. with full mods and dyno tuned jets (20-62.5-152.5, 1 washer; 12.8afr) and +6* timing mine made 44whp.

does it pull strong to redline or weaken out before you get there?

Peak power is right about 10000rpm (stock was 9300rpm) Plus it only slightly tapers off after peak all the way to redline, whereas stock if fell off a cliff after 9500rpm. So yes it pulls hard to redline, My top speed is achieved at just over 10000rpm (120mph)

You really can't compare results from different dyno's from different days done on different bikes.  I'd consider the range 35-39whp to be basically the same.

my max horse was right around 8200 and max torque around 7500. again, it was free and there was a line so they didnt bother with much, but they gave me a print off of the graph and it looks to be around those numbers ^.  i took a pic of it to post on here but my card reader isnt working, so i gotta get a new one

you are lean go up 1-2 jet sizes on the mains
max power should be around 10k and dead level power after that
ALSO YOUR EXHAUST PIPE HAS BEEN GETTING CHERRY RED(NOTICE THE WHITE EX PIPE FOR THE FIRST 10 INCH OR SO)
RUN IT AT NIGHT AND YOU WILL PROBABLY SEE WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT

yea i know the white means its gettin hot, but the thing is that i had ridden around for a month or so with the pipes black, and it wasnt until one week when i went on a 6 hour ride with my friends that they turned white. so i just figured they overheated from the long ride. cause it shouldnt be lean, its all stock, no exhaust leakes, OEM replacement airfilter, and the jets are stock. i know its a little lean from the factory but not this much.  but if my max power coming too early is a sign of being lean then i guess ill go with that

'Stock' usually means lean, especially in the fueling range where you'd be when cruising.

You may have in the ride or just before lost the hose to the top of the air box from the motor, or the drain hose from the airbox, or the air filter blew a hole - dont laugh, its happened before.
Cool.

The ninja 250 had that many more horses then the GS? WTF? I thought the ninja 500 was around the same level as the GS... considering they are both 500cc. Or did u mean something else?

the ninja 250 makes 36bhp, ninja 500 makes 60bhp, gs500 makes 50bhp.

At the wheels the 250 makes 28whp, ninja 500 50whp, gs500 39whp.
