Title: Strange New Noise
Post by: mullan on June 23, 2010, 05:57:37 AM
Hi all.

I don't know if this is an issue or not, but very recently (2 weeks after first tyre change) a noise comes from the front of the bike when approaching 90kph (about 60mph) and this noise goes away at 100kph.

The only way to describe the noise is that it is like a wine glass being rubbed with a finger.  A bit like this, but lower in tone:

The noise is coupled with high-frequency vibrations on the handlebars.  It is as if the bike has taken on a new frequency.  It is normal for all objects to vibrate at certain frequencies, but my concern is that this is new and recent and could be a warning sign something is not right?

Thanks for the ideas.
Ian.

Sounds like it could be a wheel balance problem.  Was the new tire properly balanced after mounting?  Maybe need to recheck the balance if the problem persists.  Make sure everyting was properly tightened when the wheel was reinstalled, axle nut and caliper bolts.

Thanks GSjack.  They didn't tighten the back not according to the specs, so I will do this to the front axle nut over the weekend.  The brake disc is not perfectly straight at the front, but this was an issue before the new noise...unless it got worse and I'm pretty much playing a record with my front wheel!  Anything to worry about?  Got to do another 500 miles before I get the chance this weekend to have a butchers at it.

Wheel balance normally shows up 60-70 mph and fades out,i`d get it checked.
