Title: maintenance log
Post by: 007brendan on June 24, 2010, 03:33:53 PM
How do you keep track of your maintenance records?

In the past, with my truck, all the maintenance was done by a shop, and so I would just throw the service record and receipt into my glove box, and didn't really keep track of when I was replacing certain things.

Since I'm doing all my own maintenance on the GS, I wonder what would be the best way to keep track of it.

The owners manual has the maintenance schedule.........just check off each thing you do right on the chart!
I also make notes on the inside of the front and/or rear cover.

In the haynes manual it has a checklist. I just copy that. I write the mileage at the top and any notes at the bottom eg valve clearences if I checked them that service. Then file the sheet of paper away.

In each vehicle I own (car or motorcycle) I keep a small spiral notebook (roughly 3" x 5", spiral on top).  In the cars, I keep it in the glove box.  In the bikes, it is in the tank bag.

I note every bit of maintenance --  oil and filter changes, new tires, new gaskets, valve adjustments, etc.  Each entry has date and mileage along with what was done, and any notes to remind me to watch something.

I take a 4x6" index card and cut it into two 4x3" pieces and fold them in half and they fit nicely in my wallet in a credit card slot and I have my record handy at all times.  I record each service on one line starting wilh milage, date, and very briefly the service performed.  I note GS oil filter #, spark plug # and gap, brake pad #'s, battery #, and H-4/9003/HB2 headlight bulb # in the wider margin above the lines.  Works for me, I need a pony if I stop for something on the way home.
