Title: Pictures of my 1993 GS500E
Post by: royced57 on June 27, 2010, 06:53:36 PM
Here she is!

Bought it last Sunday.  Pretty ain't she?  Well... I think so at least.

I have a question and a picture to illustrate.  The chain is actually hitting the center stand when the stand is in the up position.  Here's are a couple of pics:

The pictures are kind of blurry, but I think you can see what's going on.  Any advice on how to adjust the stand so that it's not up high enough to hit the chain?

Thanks!

Royce

Have somebody sit on it, and I'd bet you your bike it doesn't hit then. The chain has more slack when the bike is unloaded, so it'll touch when it's sitting but not when riding. You can check the chain tension though. It should have about 1.5 in of free play in the middle when it's on the side stand.

Also, welcome and nice ride!

somewhat true, it may not hit when sitting on it, but it will hit when riding because the bike bounces up and down, as does the chain, so it'll still hit even with you on it

Is the stopper still welded to your exhaust?  You can zip tie a block of rubber/old tire underneath the frame if necessary as a stopper.

I was having those problems when I got mine. I ziptied some rubber tubing to my centerstand where it rests on the frame. Aside from keeping it from hitting, it also stopped that awful noise it made when I pulled it off the stand and it would spring up and hit the frame, metal to metal. I'll try to take some pictures after work if I remember.

Im with 007
I would guess it's missing the rubber stopper that is inserted into a mount on the exhaust.

Pretty simple. It keeps my chain from rubbing on the centerstand, and it keeps the centerstand from making that awful metal thud every time I pull the bike off of it. With the size hose that I used I used to have the left side hit the bottom of my boot at times. It wasn't awful but I imagine it could bug some people. You could fix that by using thicker tubing, but then you're also lowering the stand closer to the ground. I don't lean my bike over far enough to grind the stand on the ground, but some people do. Recently I just pulled it off all together. Now if I need to work on the bike I just slide the nuts in and pull it up, and pull it off when I'm done. Then I don't have to worry about it being on the bike.

Yeah I had to do something like that to mine after I put my wileyco slipon on. It wore a groove into my center stand.

hmmm look wierd .. pictures is`t the best ..

but the chain dont look to tight or in any good condission ?

how loose is it ? (schould only be able to move it up and down like 1-2 cm and if you turn the weel if have the be the same all the way around or your chain is done)

remember to changes sporks with the chain if you choose to ..
also remember a chain schould be well oild .. I do it like once a week and after a long drive or some heavy rain ..

then I heard that it can last up to +25K km. (for a high quality chain)

a can of good chain lub cost like 10 $ and can easily last me a year .. wort it if you ask me .. + the few extra HP a well oild chain give is nice aswell ..

remember a GS have like 48 HP on the paper/crank ... but on the weel it have like 38 .. maybe 40 if your lucky .. so much power lost on the way down to the weel .. chain is the biggest sinner .. get on with it !

Ooh yea and how is it to drive ? can you hear/feel the chain bounce up and down ? then it is for sure ready to get changes or atlest tighten to start with .. but hey a new spork/chain kit cost like 100 $ in a ok quality and maybe like 140 $ if you want top quality like DID .. and if the bike have been runnig to long with a loose chain it is done, finish, caput and so is the sporks .. metal aginst metal is`t the best combo .. specialy if the chaing is`t tight and well oild .. or the metal will not last many KM and can never be the same agin ..

worst senario (tho dont think a GS have enough power tho :D) is the chain acctualy breaks when running Bc. it is worn out and not been looking after right .. think of the damages it do to your engin and maybe your leg !

like you also schould keep a eye on your tire presure .. can boath give HP and safe you gas and of course for safety reasons ;)

also now I have you .. be carefull with the GS .. check the oil often .. realy .. it have a nasty habbit of useing a "littel" oil ..
and it only take 2 minuts (remember to set it on center stand when messureing and oil pin need to bee loose (not screewded in) )

so darn anoying to drive it empty/to warm (was close to do it myself in the start .. when I check after 5 month of wither driveing I had to give it ½ a litte just to see it on the pin ! and another ½ to get it full .. thanks God I only drive short trips at winther and its cold ..

remember the oil light dont realy help you .. when the presure light (red) warn you the engin is mostlikely ready for the graveyard :(

if you have any questions feel free to ask ..

Ooh yea and good luck with it .. looking good .. this is mine:

after a lot of custom work .. want it to have the streetfighter look :D
