I'm getting ready to go on a couple hundred miler tomorrow and I was looking for places to store stuff when low and behold I noticed there is a ton of room behind those rear side panels.
Dont want to put anythng to heavy there but I had a small nylon pouch thingy and put a small portable socket set and wrench in the pouch and stuck my whole hand in there and shoved it far forward, Fit great and there is enough metal work etc.. below and around it that it doesn't look like it will come out. Both sides seem to have some very useable space.
Anybody else stuff goodies in there?
those panels are not bolted/screwed on, they use push pins to hold them on. they dont require a lot of force to pop out, I would be scared they would pop open and your stuff fall out.
There is one bolt per side panel, in the middle along the top, at least on my 98. But I think you'd still be able to pop the pushpins out, even with the bolt.
ohh yeah...I forgot about those bolts. too much "ballerina...", lost my train of thought. but I do also think the pins might still pop out.

Is that cause it scared you or do you feel inklings? Or is there some other ballerina you are fantasizing about...

Get one of those small square bungie nets and hook it on the pins under the lower rail and across the passenger seat and it will hold it all together. I wouldn't put anything very heavy inside those side panels anyway. You can then put someting like a jacket, sweatshirt, or whatever rolled up on the passenger seat under the net. I keep one of those bungie nets under my seat tucked in towards the tail light by the tool kit without the hooks on it, just hooks on the pins on the bike. Actually for years I always had a couple of bungie cords hooked across the passenger seat on my 4 old Hondas to put clothing like stuff under on cold to warm to cold spring and fall days where you take it off during the morning as it gets hot and put it back on in the evening as it gets cold again. Haven't used the nets or cords much since I put the 33L Givi trunk on my 02 GS back in 04, it's been priceless and never off the bike.

I feel dirty and a little pwned
i put a zip tie through the hole on the plate that the seat sits on in the back of the bike and i have a waterproof pouch that hold phones and wallet and i use a caribeaner (sp?) just in case and stuff the bag into the side panel, work great
