Title: Help Please with blinkers
Post by: clantonjosh on July 03, 2010, 11:58:04 AM
asking for some help/input please- i have an '04 gs500F that im toying around with and needed some help with the blinkers- basically when my blinkers are connected and i turn on either blinker, all 4 blinkers come on- left and right. i doubt its the wiring because i know how to wire stuff- i build computers. i just dont know much about motorcycles. any help would be great.

The "Don't Backchat Me, I Know Boats" Law = Whatever You Claim To Know About Will Bite You On The Butt Making You Look Like an Idiot

Translation: It will be the wiring. For no other reason than you said it wouldn't be because you know wiring. You jinxed yourself - But oddly - also pinpointed what it will be. Right on! So check the wiring system - switches, wires, relays. Problem solved.  :thumb:

This "Law" has its origins years ago in a TV ad. In the ad there is some Discussion about loading and getting into a wooden dingy at a dock. The Expert said, "Dont Backchat Me, I Know Boats" and stepped into the middle of the thinly hulled dingy and went right through it. make sure you dont have a power wire touching a ground wire on the blinkers or a bad ground they wil all blink while back feeding throught the ground.

1. Have you got LED blinkers?
2. Is your blinker warning light on the panel lighting up when you put the blinkers on?

not to but in your problem but I have blinker issues so I thought I would ask them. . . well My turn signal indicator on my gauge cluster sometimes works but sometimes it doesnt. Any one have an idea whats going on?

loose wire?  rusted connections?

let me specify :) by 'its not wiring' i meant that it wasnt any wiring i did- basically i pulled the old blinkers off and replaced with some LED blinkers. all i messed with was hots and grounds- didnt mess with switches or anything like that, just red & black wires. i was wondering what would cause that? i honestly dont know anything about where the wires go (wiring harnesses, switches) anything like that. input?

oh why didnt you say you did leds to start with.  thats your problem.  search led wiring on here you need the resisters and everything to go with them.  along with a different relay IIRC from what others have posted on here.

LOL i just posted how i did mine. if you want a no cost way of doing it like me. All i did was take a part the back OEM T/S and keep the light and metal house rap in black tape. Then tap in to the + & - rear LED with OEM one tuck it under seat and there you go  :woohoo:

the right way to do it you have to buy some things but i like to try new things  :thumb:

That's why I asked if you had LEDs in my previous post. As Josh said, that's what happens when you fit LED blinkers. The way the indicator light on the panel is wired means that all 4 lights come on if the resistance of the lights is less than the resistance of the indicator bulb. Also, the standard flasher relay won't flash with the reduced load.
There is loads of information on all this if you search.

As they said, the flasher module needs the resistive load of the old filament style bulb to get hot enough to flash (cycle) off & on.
This is the concept:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/pdfs/load_resistor_info.pdf (http://www.superbrightleds.com/pdfs/load_resistor_info.pdf)

You will typically need one resistor for the right and one for the left.
There is also a gadget called a dual load equalizer that has two resistors built into one block for simplicity sake.

I believe its 7 ohms at 40 watts per side.
It's job is to waste energy by turning your battery juice into heat.
Also note. . .
I have searched far & wide for a solid state flasher module that works (as advertised) with LED turn signals and have thus far been disappointed.
Any suggestions? (other than "backchat" of course).   ;)

Ok I used the exact same lights on my '98 Yamaha FZR600 and they work beautifully. Removed old blinkers ans replaced with these LEDs on the same wire. So is it something different with the gs500 that changes prevents them from working? I wouldn't think I would need resistors on one bike if I didnt on the other. Sorry If I'm being difficult

gs electrical system doesnt like LED's without resisters and flasher relay swaps.  there is not enough resistance in the electrical system when you install the leds to work properly.

I believe it may have something to do with the way the gs500 has a single turn signal indicator, but I could be completely wrong

ok so that seems to be the problem, thanks guys. now... any idea where i can get some that would work? i found lots of instructions and such but nowhere did i find 'add to cart'. thanks in advance

SEARCH the forum, there's loads of info. I'm over repeating the same advice again and again.

rant over :D

SAME PROBLEM CHECKIN IN!!   :cookoo:

I'm having the SAME ALL lights BLINK problem too!!  They are all new after market LED lights from ebay. I've never had a problem with them on any of my other 5 bikes (lol). Simple plug and play type lights. Two wires (male) into two wires (female).  O0  But after reading this thread about the gs500 not liking LED's im on the hunt for resistors and bla bla bla now too because my LED lights look SWEET!!! and I must have'em! lol

Time to do some thread threading

You will need this http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/16/scID/114/IMID/718

And if you want your turn signal indicator light to work you will need this http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/IMID/719

I'm sure other places sale similar for less but these have pdf manuals as well.

I do have a load balancer if someone needs one (used but works)

SoGone, please read the post above your last one!

The reason is that the indicator  :icon_idea: in the panel is wired to both left and right indicator circuits. If you put the left indicator 'on', the panel  :icon_idea: gets 12 volts from the left side, and earths through the right side  :icon_idea: s and vice versa. For this to work, the indicator  :icon_idea: s need to have significantly less resistance than the panel  :icon_idea:. If you have LEDs this is not the case and all four  :icon_idea: s flash. The easiest fix is to use the original  :icon_idea: s and put the LEDs on your Christmas tree. Next is to have LEDs but use resistors to emulate the characteristics of the old  :icon_idea: s. Most hassle is to rewire the panel  :icon_idea: with its own earth and use diodes to feed the power from each indicator circuit.
If your LEDs don't flash that is a completely seperate issue, but also related to the low current draw of the LEDs. If you use the resistors as above it should be fine, otherwise you will need a different (electronic) flasher relay.
