Title: sticking tach?
Post by: black and silver twin on July 11, 2010, 07:49:56 PM
in the last week my 07f has started having a wierd thing go on. If the bike has sat for 4 hours or more the tach wont move when I turn on the bike, no matter what the rpm it stayes at zero. But if I let it sit for 2-10 seconds it will shoot up to the correct rpm then work for the rest of the day or untill it sits for a few hours. it doesnt do it every time it sits though, only about half the time.

Initially I thought "must be bad ground connection" so I tightened the ground cable on the block, both terminals on the batt, and the engine mount bolts. Didn't help a bit. the bike runs perfect, as it always has, but this annoys the poo out of me. Also im worried it will get worse.

Then yesterday It did it again, so I flicked the tach very hard (partly out of frustration) and it fixed it! Then this morning, it farkin got stuck again, so I flicked it (less hard) and it worked the rest of the day no problem. My guess is the needle/spring is getting stuck when it sits and cools down.

I guess my question is, has enyone else experienced this? and if so, has anyone attemped/succeded fixing it?

I just had another post about an 08 tach that has been acting wonky for me.  Its not the same problem, it never reads 0 when the engines running but its got a few sticky spots or something.  It is being replaced right now under warrenty and I havent ridden in days  :dunno_white:  I have heard a couple other cases of similar problems mentioned.  I wonder if they started making tach's a little crappily when they moved to spain and changed the tach to digital.  A new tach is a pretty expensive peice so I was glad they would fix it for me, even though I would prefer to do it myself.

Do the 2007s have electronic or mechanical tachs? This is a loosely related problem, but I work as bottom of the totem pole at a high end car shop and we have a '69 Jag E-type. Those things have god awful electronics and I have to give the tach a good "technical tap" to get it to work. I wonder if the gear, or whatever causes the needle to move gets loose and needs a little persuasion to work.

I have a tach from my '93, but it probably won't match the amount of wear on your 07 and look a little faded next to your speedo. Also, your bike would have to have the mechanical tach for it to work, and I can't verify if it works or not, never seen it. BUT if you want it, PM me.  :D

thanks for the offer but the 07 does have an electronic tach.

if this is a common problem that can only be fixed by buying a new tach every few years then ill just invest in an aftermarket one that will last.

mine has been doing that since the day I bought it, it has not gotten any worse. How much is a new tach?

Mine is not going to cost my anything it is under warrenty  :icon_rolleyes:  I think the part is listed around $180 for the whole tach.  I think that is just what goes inside the bucket and but it might be a new bucket and lense and everything.  Mine didn't start getting wonky until I went to a track day  :dunno_black:
