Title: SV650 Streetfighter headlamp
Post by: rock_rebel on July 16, 2010, 12:56:34 PM
Has anyone tried to install an SV650 Streetfighter headlamp on a GS500 before? I found one on eBay that I'm really interested in buying, but I'm not sure if the installation is any different than the regular round SV650 headlamp.

Here is the headlamp:

Click on my signature link and you can see one.  I did just the lamp/bulb in the stock housing.  I had to figure it out as  went but it looks great!

from the look of it, the mounting holes are 11.5 inches apart from each other. if you were planning on using the stock headlight bracket (for a non-faired gs500) than i would imagine you would need spacers and bolts long enough to get to the mounting holes on the headlamp. considering it looks like it just mounts via those two holes, i'd say it shouldnt be too hard to make the spacers and get bolts to mount it up.

pretty much anything can work if you put work into it.

if you look at the listing, it labels the product as a "universal" headlight piece. it's just another aftermarket piece that was titled for the SV's to hit a specific market. there are very few aftermarket items that are just plug/play, bolt-on products. youre going to have to fabricate something in order to get it to stick.

if i did get that headlight, i would probably cut a piece of metal tube that spans the gap between the 2 stock headlight brackets (so when tightening from the sides, the brackets can't flex), then have spacers on each side to extend to the mounting holes of the aftermarket unit.

sorry i can't explain things very well. i'm still having issues making brackets to mount the ducati fairing i bought =P

edit: the "MODIFIED REQUIRE" is another dead give-away that the part is a universal aftermarket part, made to be fitted to any bike the buyer wants it put onto to.  find the style you like and commit! then once you get it in your hands, it's easier to start figuring out ways to get it to work for your application.

Thanks! The price of the light seems a bit steep just in case I messed something up and couldn't use it anymore. I'm still on the lookout for the original SV650 headlight which seems to be a hard find

What is the distance between the two headlight brackets on the GS? I would like to get a headlight that is close to the original diameter as possible for a near perfect fit. How do I make spacers and can I use the original bolts?

25W/25W bulbs are going to be dim as hell. Cool shape for a light though.

As far as brackets go, some of those universal streetfighter units come with rubber mounting straps, that just wrap around your fork tubes.

Either that, or you could go with a set of these (if you want something inexpensive). -->  http://cgi.ebay.ca/Motorcycle-black-Universal-Headlight-bracket-cafe-racer-/380239708148?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item58880d7ff4

Because the bulbs are dim I don't think that light would be street legal around here. Too bad that's the highest bulb it supports.

What wattage of bulb should I look for when buying a new headlight? Does anyone know of any cool looking headlights that fit well with the GS?

55/65w is what you want for something bright enough.

These are a good bit more expensive, but just like with all things, you get what you pay for.

Those are way out of my price range. I think I'll stick with my original plan. I think the stock GS headlight only has a 25W bulb anyway. Not trying to turn my bike into something high end or anything, just want a different look that's all.

Should be a 55w, not a 25w
