I recently bought a new 09 and my dealer told me not to bring in until I had 1000 miles on it. Dealer said it was a waste of money coming in earlier. The manual says 600 miles. Does anyone know if it matters and what is best.
Well I have an 06 with about 2300 miles on it and it has not been in for a fullservice yet but I did do an oil change at 800 miles myself . That I would do for sure, it's easy!
It runs perfect and gets about 60 MPG normal riding. I'm paranoid about the valves not being checked. One dealer mechanic told me if it starts easy and runs great dont mess with it. I still might take it in but it wont be a dealer. I got quoted a complete service at a private shop for $250.00. I might take it there.
I didn't take mine in to do the 600 mile service. I changed the oil myself. But - don't make the same mistake as me! Go around and tighten all the bolts you can find! I lost a bunch of bolts that vibrated loose and had to replace stuff. I'm still missing a few but nothing critical.
Check the valves! Might as well learn how to now, and it's always good to know your valve clearance.

ASK the dealer to put that in writing.
Call Suzuki and ASK them about what the dealer said and if they confirm it, also ASK them to put it in writing.
The owner's manual - made the by manufacturer who is responsible for the warranty - clearly states 600 miles for the first service. What happens if you deliberately take it past this point and something mechanical happens to the bike? Suzuki would be valid in denying any warranty claim and when push comes to shove, without it being in writing the dealer will deny telling you 1000 miles. And YOU will be left holding the bag.
I am curious, though. Why is it a Waste at 600 miles but not at 1000 miles when it would be the same service?
Anyway. If you're being told something different to what Suzuki wrote in the manual, get it in writing to cover yourself. Or take it in as scheduled.

Mister`s right could invalidate warranty + 0-600 mile tight engine wouln`t hurt to get an oil change.
Thanks for the replies. I think I will change oil now and let them do their thing at 1000. After that, I will probably try to do most of the maintenance myself.

They told me that not much is usually wrong at 600 but small problems will show up a little later so they will catch more problems, saving me time and trouble.
I mainly asked the question because I did not feel like changing the oil when it would be changed in a few weeks. Now, I think I will do it just to be safe.

if you have warranty you should go and get this 600 mile check-up.
The main reason for this initial check is to make sure that there are no valve (shims) clearance issues.
If there is nothing wrong at 600 miles I am pretty sure there will be nothing wrong for next couple thousand miles. I did my valve clearance check at 1000 miles, only because I got my bike used and wasn't sure if they were checked at 600 miles. I did it myself, because I did not have warranty.

i did my 600 mile oil change and the old oil looked like it had ultra-fine glitter in it. You don't want that crap circulating around in there longer than you have to. I dont trust the dealers for much though. That service is supposed to involve checking and adjusting almost everything, but it is all listed in the manual so you can do it all yourself. I spent about a month going through the different adjustments and stuff listed in the manual one at a time. The dealer told me to keep my reciept for the oil and filter but they didn't ask for it when i took it in for warrenty work.
I had my dealer do the 600 mile maintenance. They do a lot on the first maintenance as others mentioned. After they adjusted everything my MPG went up by 5 mpg. They also check for anything that might be defective or wearing wrong and replace whatever is needed because it is still under factory warranty. Have the dealer do everything if you're like me: new to biking, love to ride, and not fond of taking a day to tear things apart and get all greasy. I play with the electrical and make additions but the engine I'd rather leave to the experienced dealer (other than tightening and lubing the chain)
