Title: Gasket replacement on crankcase cover
Post by: rock_rebel on July 31, 2010, 11:17:03 AM
After waiting for some parts to ship from Suzuki I'm ready to put my bike back together  :). One thing I'm confused about though is the installation of the new gasket over the crankcase cover. I was told at the dealer that I wouldn't need to apply any gasket sealant to it. Is this true? In that case I should only have to put the gasket on, and the magnets in the cover will fir it securely in place? Thanks!

Magnets?.....is this a new cost-cutting exercise by Suzuki to save on the cost of bolts?!

ive rebuilt a few GS engines now and the only time i used gasket sealer was puttnig the two crank case halves back together. there is no gasket intended for the halves but i used a thin film of sealant for peace of mind.

ive never sealed any of the side cover gaskets and have never had a leak. just make sure your mating faces are as clean as possible.

Thanks! I installed the cover today and so far everything looks good. I haven't put any oil in the bike yet though.

Now that the cover is back should I replace the oil filter if I'm putting new oil in (the filter was changed about two months ago) ?

if you have one then yes, makes sense.
if you dont have one and your happy that the oil that came out was clean then i personally wouldnt worry about changing it.
