Title: Testing the waters
Post by: kenwa31 on August 01, 2010, 05:22:01 PM
Hello all, I have an 89 gs500 it  recently had a cam chain failure so now im trying to decide on fixing it or parting it.  Other than the obvious engine damage its in good shape, some dents and dings on the tank, and some rash on the exhaust from a po putting it down.  It has a v&h exhaust, carbs with dynojet stage 3 kit and lunchbox.  So i guess im entertaining some offers on parts to see what I should do.  Email is best klee73@uscellular.blackberry.com.  The bike is located in central maine if anyone has interest in buying it outright.

What do you mean cam chain failure? Did it jump timing or what?

I have a bunch of engine parts that can help you out if you decide to fix it.

Broken cam chain, bent valves, not sure I feel like going to the effort of pulling the motor and splitting the cases.

i have an entire healthy head, a good cam chain, good cams, and i might have a couple good cranks, but yours is probably okay. In your case its probably cheaper to rebuild if you're willing to put in the work. It might cost you $400 or less to rebuild, a motor will cost $400, plus a couple hundred to ship, plus $50 or so for gaskets and nuts. Ask me how I know   :D

Just trying to help you think through it. If you decide to rebuild I probably have almost all the parts you need. You gotta have em, I gotta sell them, ill charge you way less than ebay, just lemme know.

oh, i'm trying to look at prices for the right side fairing. I laid her down going 0 mph (grabbed the front brake too hard in a parking lot) and the fairing cracked...the look on my face after that.
