Title: Paint for crankcase cover
Post by: rock_rebel on August 01, 2010, 06:29:37 PM
There are some scratches on the crankcase cover (not the side I replaced) and would like to touch it up by getting some matching paint. I've tried this once but the paint didn't quite match. Any color code I need or could the dealer mix me a little paint?

Went to the  dealer today, was told to go to an automotive paint shop that uses this gun thingy with a suction cup at the end, and this is supposed to figure the color code out. That didn't work. Dealer said there's nothing they can do. I thought about repainting it a different color but one of the covers are brand new so I'm not sure if that's very cost effective. Any sticker strips I could put over the area that would still make it look ok, or am I out of luck?

Here is the part I would like to paint. It's the part of the cover that joins seamlessly with the cover that contains the generator.

I've tried already to repaint but with bad results. Sorry for the quality, the pic was taken with my phone.

Not sure if that will match the paint exactly. If I repainted the whole engine it would cost me more in paint than just getting a used sprocket cover on ebay. There's one on ebay right now for $5, but because it's in the US the seller "says" shipping will cost $25. Still not bad I guess considering I'd probably spend that much in spray paint anyway. Maybe I'll get a new one by next riding season.

A body shop worth a crap can break out a few color decks and eyeball a color that's more or less an exact match. Shops mix color on site, so they can make almost any color ever made, finding a reasonable match shouldn't be too bad.
