Well I tube the carbs, cleaned everything up and was ready to sell it. I rode it about 20 miles to make sure everything was tip top. I got a buyer interested and then went out to check it over before he came and I had dim lights to the dash and was able to jump it. While jumped I would get 13.8-14 volts @ 5000 rpm, but if I disconnected the jumper battery the bike would die. I thought the battery was just too low to run the bike so I got a new battery, charged it and put it in. Now I am not even getting lights on the instruments. A while back I had the 20 amp fuse on the starter solenoid blow. I replaced it and now this is happening.
I ran a continuity test on the alternator like Kerry says to do in his post under the FAQ page, but I was not able to do the test on the alternator while the bike is running. I am thinking it is the reg/rect, but my other concern is there is not voltage at the starter solenoid with the key on. I'm a little lost. If anyone has any advice please help me. I want to get this thing running and sold.
Man, when my battery was dead I could jump it and it would stay running even with a battery dead as a hammer...... I say it's in the charging system at least......Do you think your 13.8 was coming from the car alt. and not the bike? What is the battery putting out when you test with meter by itself? If it's dead that may be why no juice to starter at all. Your charging system is not likely going to charge it so I would check the acid level in the battery and put it on a outside charger if you can. Then check the power at the starter.
I don't know much about the charging system on these bikes but those things may help you get some things isolated until the other people reply. Hope it helped a little at least.
Good luck
