Title: License issue
Post by: Deros514 on August 06, 2010, 08:22:23 PM
I'm a California resident, lived here all my life and I might be moving to Texas. Now I know from my sister who lives there, you surrender your license to the Department of Public Service and get a Texas license. Standard process for a car license I guess. However I cant find any specific information if my class M endorsement will also transfer over. The closest thing I can find says I can ride in Texas with an out of state license while visiting (about 45 days IIRC). For what its worth I'm 20 and have also completed the MSF here in CA. Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing?

Can always try it, ( after you move to tx, ( use the CA id) can in essence pass the 45 day thing. get stopped say sorry just moved here, 2 mos down the road, if you get stopped again, ( as long as it isnt hte same cop, can do it again. cannot do this indefinately though, i had dealtwith this as a LEO, and for the most part if the person wasnt breaking laws seriously, ( say maybe a MINOR speeding infraction or somethign worthy of a warning at best, id tell tehm you have 30 days to get thigns changed over ;), BUT IF you cant swap teh m endorsement over to tx, just take the test at teh DMV. you already did MSF in CA so any benefits will be transferred over. UNLESS TX says you MUST take MSF, ask tehm if your tests in CA would cover that requirement

DO NOT surrender jack-sh!t.
That license is yours.  You trained for it, you PAID for it.  It's a privilege to have, but it's still your PROPERTY.  Just like your house or your car.
That's why the cop makes such a big deal of giving it back to you, if you get stopped.

Keep it till it runs out, and then get a new one.  If the b!tch at the counter won't transfer the motorcycle endorsement, go back on another day.  There aren't specific rules they follow, don't let them fool you.
The cops don't give a crap, neither does the insurance company.

My wife handed over her $3000 European lifetime license before I could stop her.  Her dad rented out a room in their house to get her that thing.
Some 300 lb gorilla woman told her she'd go to jail if she didn't.

It sucks to because the people at the DMV don't even know their own laws for their state. After I got my bike went there to get registration done asked the counter agent if I could get a handicapped tag for my bike. She told me they didn't exist to just use my hang tag at the parking lot. I told her that made no sense but I assumed she knew what she was doing and so I put it in my tail pack. that took about two weeks until it was stolen.

Went back to the DMV to replace my hangtag told them what happened. This agent asked me why I didn't have a permanent tag. "well I was told you don't have them" She whipped one out asked me to go out and get the old tag and switched it out for me. At least with a permanent tag I get less looks than with a hang tag sitting in the map pocket of my tail bag. Which I'm suprised didn't disappear and my hang tag did. But, it did disappear a few weeks later at my apartment complex. Ran a quick errand in the car came back and was gone. All they got though was a useless bag being they didn't take the attachment straps and a fake pair of oakleys.

So it seems I should hold off as long as possible before switching over, and then wait some more. Fine by me, I was thinking along the same lines since no leo would know if I'm visiting/residing or moving back and forth. The other issue that comes up would be vehicle registration. While I would be able to keep tags current, this one doesn't require a traffic stop to see.

Deros514,

When you move to Texas you will have to get a Texas drivers license within 30 to 45 days.  The license will include your present motorcycle endorsement.

Make **SURE** they include the endorsement.  It is called a class CM here.

If the motorcycle endorsement is lost, you will have to relicense.

I moved to Texas last year from Virginia and had no problem.  Texas will recognize your California license with all endorsements and restrictions. :D

Keep the shiny side up,

Chuck

PS;  Where in Texas will you be?

Yes, do get the texas licenses. If you really think you have to surrender your california license to texas to get them (really, you don't.) You can always just apply for a copy before you leave california. I think here in AZ a copy of your license is $11?  They hole punch your old one here.. and then give it back to you.. but if you tell them you lost it or whatever they don't care.. I have like three copies of my DL.

I've got a plan already for keeping tags current, so thats covered. Keeping copies of my CA license would be useful if I were to move back, I'll keep that in mind. It looks like I've got quite a few good suggestions here to try if I run into trouble at DPS but hopefully I shouldn't have any trouble.

Chuck, I'll be moving to the Houston area. I've visited before, nice place. I stayed about 2 and a half weeks during June/July. I thought I was going to die in the heat and inescapable humidity but towards the end I was getting used to it. If I do decide to move, I think I'll miss the twisty roads I have around me more than the weather(you can simulate weather with aircon lol). I did find a track that I want to check out  though and its only about an hour out from Houston.

No once you establish residency in Texas you no longer need that CA license, Texas will issue you one and notify California then CA will terminate your license, your M does transfer, you need to familiarize yourself with the interstate license compact. If you decide to move back to CA the procedure is the same just transfer your license. When your tags come due you'll register the vehicle in Texas and receive Texas plates, many states including texas have laws requiring you to register the vehicle in state so many days within establishing residency. I don't live in Texas so am not familiar with their laws.

I know Oklahoma title and registration was less expensive than CA when I moved here in 89 and people were keeping PO boxes in Texas to register their vehicles in texas since it was cheaper than OK. You will probably find that Texas registration is cheaper than CA.

yep, this is accurate. go to the dmv for ANYTHING and it turns into a fiasco if there is a Buddha Loves You behind the counter. need a drivers license after moving to a new state ? BIG DEAL. gotta ahve your birth certificate, ID, SS card, insurance (WHY?) and a water bill. I JUST FREAKING MOVED HERE LADY ! then they say you have to give them your FL license to get the AL one. f%$k off, i'll keep it. mater o fact, i'll just take the stupid AL drivers license test, along with the new M endorsement test. ok, no big deal. you can do that.

WTF ?

then return with two cars, a motorcycle, and TITLES IN HAND and ask for AL tags.... oh god no, you have to have proof you paid taxes LAST YEAR IN FLORIDA. WTF LADY, THE TITLE IS RIGHT HERE, FROM LAST YEAR, FOR EVERY SINGLE VEHICLE- YOU DONT GET THOSE UNLESS YOU PAY YOUR TAXES ON THE VEHICLES !!!

IDIOTS...

come back at lunch time, different lady, actually a 30 something girl, who is humming and smiling... i fumble in my pockets to avoid the mastadon sized Buddha Loves You, and get to see the smiling lady. she goes BLAM BLAM BLAM and stamps everything once as required, transfers the titles to AL, doesn't even glance at my insurance cards, and actually says "Welcome to Alabama, and have a nice day sweetie" with a smile. WOW. maybe she just axed up some folks before lunch, or maybe she was just a great person. the mastadon chick could take a leap.

now, in this day and age, why can't we have a national ID ? why, because the states lose tons of money for absolutely nothing. a piece of paper, and they get 30-50 bucks. takes 3 minutes... ya, it's a racket. bastards.

my credit card works everywhere from mexico to canada, so does my cellphone. why the hell can't my drivers license ? rant done :-)

How To Be Invisible.... do NOT live at the address on your license. Better, have a license address in another state.

Makes it Very difficult to Trace you. Say you live in Bellingham WA but your license address was Tullahoma TN. if anyone wants to find you, all they get is the TN address. Where you really are is unknown. And if'n you rent.... man, nigh on impossible to find you then. And if you rent and work for yourself mowing lawns or some other CASH business, forget about it, no-one will find ya - it's impossible to find someone who rents a room and works for cash.

Anyway. If you value your privacy you might find this Interesting http://www.amazon.com/How-Invisible-Step-Step-Protecting/dp/0312252501
