Title: Adjusted valves, now I have a very distinct tick from on of the valves!
Post by: wakdady on August 09, 2010, 01:06:05 AM
So my exhaust valves were a little tight. The .038 feeler couldn't fit in at all. So I went down from a 275 to a 265. Now I have a really nasty tick coming from on of them.
Can over torquing the cam caps cause this? I think I torqued it to 15 ft lbs instead of the 7-11 ft lbs.

i dont believe over tightening the caps would cause the problem.
whats the clearance now on the valve you worked on?

Some twinners have had broken cam caps, maybe due to over tightened bolts?

Uh... Are you sure you're not just hearing the sound of a loose valve? Loose valves tend to tick a little bit. It's a good thing.

well hopefully thats what it is. i dont think overtorquing by 5 ft lbs would do such harm, but you never know. i was gonna take the valve cover off and re-torque just to be safe. i didnt sync the carbs and taking the tank off again would give me a chance to do this.
you wanna come by and take a listen? I'll try to post a vid so you can hear it

I'm actually heading up to SF this evening around 4:00. If you want to bring the GS to MotoJava between then and 6:00, I'd be happy to give it a listen.

(I live in Fremont, BTW.)
