Title: Can't get bead against rim to fill her up!! :(
Post by: jtenright on October 29, 2003, 06:54:02 PM
such a pain took me 3 hours and scraped my rim to sh**
trying to get the damn tire on

well I got it on, but can't fill it up
I tried bouncing the tire, and using high pressure air, to pop it over
almost wann atry spraying some hairspray or  carburator cleaner inside the tire to pop it over.

What is the problem???

should have taken it to a shop and paid 10-20 per rim

Get a ratcheting style tie-down strap and put it around the circumference of the tire and tighten the hell out of it.  If this doesn't work, go to the shop.  By the way, this is exactly why I buy my tires from the shop.  Buy from them and they mount/balance them for free if you bring the rims in off the bike.

could always try wd-40/ether and a cigarette lighter, butvery very dangerous. try the strap idea, btw my shop still charged me for the mount/balance, but only $5 each.(bought tires from them) :thumb:

Monster trucks and some heavy equipment with large tires use the explosive aerosol methode,  the ratcheing tie strap works well as stated. now, i have to ask, why is this tire reluctant to bead? there must be a  reason.  Not wanting to bead shouldnt have scratched up the rim, unless its hard and didnt want to stretch onto rim and doesnt flex enough to bead..... hmmm?

When they put the tires on, the often use some gel/glue like stuff to get the tire to slide over the bead. Maybe this also seals a bit when the tire isn't inflated yet. You could try to get some of this stuff and stuff it between the bead and rim   :?  (nooo! not too much!! :P)

Do you have the valve stem core out?  If not then you'll have a hard time getting enough flow to seal the bead.  That in conjuction with a strap should fix you right up.   :thumb:

Yep, clean your rims of the old tire residue; and we used to use just plain ol' soapy water to help get that bead to seat. Is the tire out of round?

on my friends harley it took a whole lot of tire pressure from the main airpump plus a shot of air thru the portable air shot thinge and 20 minutes at a car dealer to get it on, cause the motorcycle place could not get it on.

It was a Bridgestone S11 dual compound thinge, in the 100 width tire.. it was tiny but so hard to put on.
