Title: Bogged down acceleration from 1500rpm to 3000rpm
Post by: error on August 24, 2010, 07:06:06 AM
The bike idles perfectly with proper acceleration at higher rpms but from 1500rpm till about 3000rpm the throttle response is sluggish. Gas is fresh, no problems with fuel filter, recently took apart and cleaned the carburetors, thinking the throttle cable could be binding. Anything else worth checking out?

Sounds like your bike is running perfectly....the Gs doesn't really make power under 3k rpms.... get the revs up some  and slip the clutch.

Not quite, I remember the bike having a lot more kick along that rpm range. Feels like I'm setting off in 5th gear from a stop.

I have put nearly 4500km on my GS this year. (from learning to getting a new bike). The GS has almost 0 pickup under 4000 RPM.

I can cruise at 3700 to 4000 RPM comfortably, however that is only on a flat road with low wind. If the road has a hill or wind I have to shift and bring the rev's up or the engine complains and gets a bit jerky/rough.

As for off the start.... I've never been able to get the bike to take off well at 3000 rpm or less. Never. My wife recently took over my GS and she says the same. Let me make some noise and use the clutch to transfer the power while keeping your rpm above 3000 and closer to 3500-4000rpm.

Its not a good idea to bog your engine all the time. Theses bike work well in their power band ~4500+rpm.

(I think I sad in an old persons pee at the cafe... I smell it everywhere I go now)

07 gs500f, no mods.

But even in neutral, I'll twist the throttle and the revs will pause for a split second around 2-3k then shoot up. Fouled pilot jet?

Not quite ... rev up problems are usually rich, also if you over shot on the rich side power trails off drastically. Like if you're 1 size too lean you'd barely notice it. 1 size too rich it will barely run. Something like that, so OK you're rich in that range. Now why are you rich ... 2 reasons.

1. Clogged air filter - solution - clean it or replace it.
2. Float level is too high - solution, well set it to the level of gasket, or 1-2mm down from where it is now. If it gets better, do another 1-2 mm till its at gasket level.

Cool.

007Brendon - how did you manage 39 torqs ? GS makes 26 or so stock.

What dyno was used ? spikes when shifting dont count ... something is wrong with that measurement.

Cool.

Mine takes off at 3k no problem at all. Far lower than that in first.

It will pull at 3k in top gear and accelerate smoothly on flat ground if I don't give it too much throttle and its OK full throttle at 3500 at any time.

I have the mild jet kit from Mr. Buddha and the rest is stock.

If the OP bike is running different than before then something went wrong, likely in the carbs.

Buddha,

The chart says that it's a Dynojet 150, measuring SAE Corrected Torque in N-m.
