Title: ?? for moto. mechanics/shop managers/anyone who knows about getting job @ a shop
Post by: socialDK on September 01, 2010, 06:32:53 PM
I am thinking of getting into moto repair and wonder if mechanics/shop managers or owners see a difference between a special school like UTI/Wyotech or junior college?   A local community college offers a certificate program at a far less expensive cost than wyotech.

If I went into a shop looking for a job are these programs looked at equally?  How are they viewed differently?

i'd say their gonna look a WHOLE lot....at experience..experience...experience....what youve done/worked on...ie experience..and schooling...cuz my buddy works at really the only bike/boat shop here within a 30 mile radius  and i'm pretty sure he didn't go to either one..he's 32 and rode most his life i believe and can fix a lot of crap..sea doo's to his rc51...to boat stuff, he's kinda a jack of all trades...so i really dn't know what to tell you but to goto school possibly but talk to shops and find out how much you'd make etc...if you were...say the best and most  awesome at being a mechanic because honestly i don't think youd make much if anything over 25,000 a year starting fresh out of school with like hardly any at all experience plus  tell them your plans about going to school for it etc...and see what they say cuz honestly i'm probably pretty ignorant on the subject too, but thking bout it reminds me he said something about certificates that companys issue when u take their tests..like say suzuki..honda etc...because a shop has to be certified i believe to work on certain or most brands and if you're like..a suzuki expert..obviously you'd be more important their than at the triumph dealership,

thanks for the input s10nova.  I would be going in with minimal experience but I DO have a can do/will do attitude that, at least in my opinion, is lacking in many people today.

I do plan on talking to a few shop in my area (bay area. don't know what the demand is here), schools and maybe local forum.

I'm not sure the bay area is the best for moto repair.  My neighbor was a mechanic at moto marin in San Rafael before they shut down this year.  He said there's not a lot of shops, and the county is making it difficult to open new shops because all the green, hippy bullshit.
