Title: GS450 / 500 / GR650 engine hybrid??
Post by: cafe hillsy on September 02, 2010, 05:36:27 PM
Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows for sure what's interchangeable within these motors? I've read on GS Resources that the 500 cylinders can be put on the 450 bottom end...and then the GR650 head....which makes around 570cc (boring the 500 sleeves to accept the GR650 pistons).

My idea is to put a set of 500 cyls and pistons onto the 450 bottom, and perhaps still use the 450 head?? (in case you're wondering, you can't just put a 500 engine in the 450 chassis because the straighter exhaust ports on the 500 foul the downtubes). There are a truckload of smashed up 500's in the wreckers over here, so sourcing an engine / sets of barrels should be fairly easy.....BUT the GR650 is a pretty rare beast over here.....so using my existing 450 head would be the way to go....maybe... :icon_question:

Anyway, any insights / experience / pics would be most awesome  :thumb:

The GS450 bottom end is more or less identical to the GS500 bottom end. There's no gains to be had in swapping it out. AFAIK, the GR650 engine is a direct replacement for the GS500, discounting some of the typical stuff like the carbs. If you want to build some kind of bastardized hybrid, I'd either recommend the GR650 in the GS500 frame, or a simple overbore to the stock GS500 engine. I've seen plenty of people bore the GS out to 550+ cc.

TheBuddha may be able to talk more about GR650 engine swaps. I've heard that he's built one.

Thanks for the reply. I have a GS450...so the chassis is a twin cradle downtube (old skool), so putting the GS500 motor in won't work (exhaust ports foul the 450 downtubes). And the 650 motor is pretty rare over here (Australia), so hence my thoughts on using 500 barrels to up the ante on the standard 450 bore.

I guess I could also use a 500 bottom end and block with the 450 head??  :dunno_black:

I did a lot of research on here, and in one of the posts Buddha said something about a custom exhaust to clear the frame.

Cant remember if he was talking about the 500 motor or the 450/650 motor (or both)

So a GR650 is a direct bolt on to a GS500 frame??? ummm anyone have a GR650 engine for a good price on here?

A GR motor has outward pointed exhaust ports, will fit a 450 easier than the 500.
I have managed to cram a gr in a gs frame mainly with werase643's help. In fact it fits easier and gets out easier than the GS motor in the gs frame.
You have to cut the top T brace off and make it bolt on, else it wont allow you to do a valve adjustment in the frame.
I am stilll workng on it though, the exhaust is the easy part. Get a sport bike pipe and cut off the top 2-3 inches and you can make the rest. Infact its easier to fit a dirt tracker style high pipe that runs by your knee on the gs450. On a GS it looks stupid.
Anyway I have pics - 1 sec -

Cool.

I remember that day. It took us(werase643) like 10 minutes to get the GR into the GS frame. if I remember right the rear mount bolted right up after that you would have to fab up tabs i guess to mount the rest of the motor.  O0
