Title: Getting a fatter tyre tomorrow opinions ?
Post by: SparkzZ on September 03, 2010, 03:30:28 AM
Tomorrow i will be getting a fatter rear tyre, going from a 110 to a 140 so I was wondering how does it handle with the new tyre on and has much changed with the feel of the bike? Also will i need to get a fatter front tyre or is it ok just to upgrade the rear tyre and leave the front stock.

thanks mark..

if you have a gs500, it comes stock with a 130-70-17  a 140-70-17 will fit fine, and look better. front tire will be fine left alone

have not done it myself.. talked to a tyre man the other day though who has fitted and rode on wider tyre but standard rim with his GS .. he said that overall it felt fine , it "tipped in" on the corners a lot easier BUT also it was slightly harder to get it back up again after the corner. Then went on to say a experienced rider "should not" have too much trouble with it, but a new rider may find it alarming at 1st.

As i am still a new rider i will stick with standard size, unless i take another option as many on here have done and get a wider rim also  :thumb:

There's a good chance that the 140 is approved for fitment to the GS500's 3.5 inch rim. If so, it should be a no brainer install.

Yeah just make sure the particular tire you're going with is compatible with your wheel.

I have the 140/70 on mine and it feels fine.  Looks like it belongs too.  I have a 150/60 on there from previous owner which looked about the same.  I think you will be pleased with the look and feel of the 140.  Good luck to you.

my opinion is spell "tyre" as tire.  and get a 140.  my friend ran a 140 on his zx6 when stock is 130/70/17 like the gs and it looked much better. but dont think its gonna help your cornering or anything like that. just cosmetic.  but imo worth it since its prolly the same price or like 5 bucks more than stock anyway.

The smaller the tire, the less rotational mass to hold the engine back.

A larger tire may look better, but a smaller tire is easier to turn.

thanks for all your input.
If i did get the 140 tire/tyre  then it would be for looks only really. I think it would make the bike look more fat at the rear end and im doing a few little upgrades/mods to it and i thought that one would look good. if anyone has any other cool looking mods or tips please let me know, because as soon as i find my PC cable for my camera ill start posting pics of her transformation  :thumb:

Good point, now I don't think I'm getting a bigger rear tire/tyre.

I raced with a Dunlop 150 back in the day. Never let me down... :)
