My brights indicator light went out - I know I saw this how-to somewhere but I seem to not be able to find it.
I don't know where the how to is, but all you've gotta do is undo the 2 bolts that holds the gauge assembly to the top clamp, pull the wire/light out, swap the bulb and plug it back in. Just remember how you pulled it apart and you shouldn't have any problem getting it back together.
OK, I'll try to do it 'blind'.... there is an Auto Zone near the house so I guess it'll low stress...
Buy a Haynes or Clymer book on the GS500. These books cover everything and are really worth the money.

I just replaced burnt out/missing turn/high beam indicator lights on my son's bike not long ago. Could have used this write up instead of doing it by trial and error. The knob you turn to reset the tripmeter fell out and there is the worlds tiniest screw to put it back in. Not sure if this is common or I just got lucky.
