Title: Ride to the Salton Sea 09/11/2010 (Warning, no GS500's)
Post by: ineedspeed on September 12, 2010, 01:18:09 AM
What a day, Idyllwyld, Salton Sea and Julian in one day. I just wanted to share todays ride with everyone, I'd lke to do this ride on my GS but sadly it's out of commision.. The day started off with a meetup in Fountain Valley, CA and then riding to the first point on the map. The weather was great, the air clear but the temps were all over the map. We went from 60's to 104 degrees Farenheit and back to the 60's. This pretty much took my buddy and I all day to complete. I'm the fat, goofy guy in the pictures.

Nice pictures.  The yamaha R6 and R1 are some of the few motorcycles that look fast when they are standing still!

That's what bike riding is all about. Why take 80 odd miles to get from start to finish? Ride the long 300 mile way. Right on! :thumb:

BEE-YOOOOTI-FUUULL !

I 've been there...spent several of the god awfullest hottest days 'n nights of my life there once.

I wonder how the gs would do on that ride, elevation and temperature considered, ?

Yes, it is haaaaawwwtttttt!! I am also curious about how the GS would fare in the heat seeing as how it is air cooled.  The bike I rode is water cooled and the temp gauge read 200 to 224 degrees whenever I would come to stop.

GS500 does not do bad at all in heat :) I rode mine once in about 120F weather - for about 4-5 hours. I didn't stop (except for gas) and it was 80-ish most of the way. The engine was fine - I burned a LOT more oil that usual (probably at least 1 qt during this period) but the bike took it like a champ. Came home, freaked out cause there was no oil on dipstick, added a quart, everything's back to normal.

Very very nice pics, I want to go there now.

For the gs, as long as you ride it's okay since the airflow will cool the engine. But if you stop very often (red light) then it's not so good.

Must have been boring to ride bike powerfull like R1 considering the low speed limit no??

As you mentioned, the stop and go traffic is what got me thinking about the GS's ability to handle heat over 100 degrees Farenhet. Part of the route we took had us going through city traffic and that's when the R1's fans were going non-stop.

Riding the R1 slow is not a problem, the bike handles it well and we were only traveling at a slower pace through the towns. The main portion of the route we took consisted of open and twisty roads, where the R1 shines. Truth be told, if I were to do it again I would purchase an FZ1, horsepower similar to the R1 but a seating position that is more forgiving.
