Title: Streetfighter fairing
Post by: loco on September 17, 2010, 11:44:12 AM
Has anyone seen one of these on an older GS500?  I was wondering how it looked and if it is worth it.

See this auction on E-bay.

everwhere i read, i read that they dont light the road that well, theyre just used to keep the bike street legal, and for cosmetic looks. very durable for stunting.

oh yeah, don't even bother, you won't be able to see anything at night, plus they're super cheap and just kinda flop around. They serve their purpose in the stunt bike world but that's about it. Just browse ebay for a while until you find a z1000 headlight or something like that.

That just seems so un-GS500.

Try this one:

Go here for lots of choices of headlights, fairings and wind screens.

Hey,

I used a X8 pocket bike front cowl including the light setup. I hollowed the headlight housing and placed in two projector fog lights and they work really well.

I took the housing apart, cut 2 wholes big enough to fit the projectors, and a 1" diameter hole in the front (headlight housing plastic front cover) to create ventilation. I love it at night and it looks good.

Here are pics of it on the bike:

Nice job! Sharp looking street fighter.
You could add engine crash bars and it would look even meaner!
(How about covering up (aka painting over) the rust on the exhaust?)

Looks sweet!
I say add a bellypan. I just added one too mine and I'm liking the look.

In case your mind isn't made up, my friend had one of those and just riding on the freeway, the wind cracked it...so I say it's a no go.

I wrapped the exhaust in DEI black exhaust wrap after taking the pictures, was planning on buying a belly pan/chin fairing but selling the bike tomorrow and picking up a 1987 BMW 325is e30 (5spd) with koni adjustable struts, eibach pro sport springs, and a tuned ecu.

Thanks, that tells me what I need to know.  Think that maybe I will stay away from them.

I've looked at some full fairing kits for the bike and not sure that is the way I want to go, at least cost wise right now.  Just looking at options.

There are at least 4 belly pans on the market and you can sometimes find an original Suzuki one. Some plastic, some fiberglass. When it broke on the freeway - what was it made of? What brand was it? It could have been cracked from mounting it or maybe it took a hit going over a curb or something that cracked it. It could have been defective. It could have come loose. Was it for the GS or a generic one that was modified? There are just too many variables as to why one would blow off on the freeway. They just don't do that and many bikes are sold with them (Ninja 500 and others).

So many people have belly pans and we just don't hear of them breaking off. Suzuki had them available for naked models until about 2004 when they stopped making them naked (I search Europe for GS500 parts, so they may have stopped earlier in the US). Same for the headlamp cowling. They wouldn't have made them all those years if they always broke on the freeway.

I just put on the Suzuki original. No real measurements of where the mounts go so you have to slowly get them in the right place. If you force things, you'll crack any belly pan.

I see no reason to shy away from belly pans ("bug spoilers" to the Europeans)
