Title: Won't Turn Over
Post by: dlighthill on September 29, 2010, 09:18:48 AM
I had just brought my bike back home from a nice ride and parked it in the back yard to do some routine maintenance. The next day I discovered that my pups (2 75lb+ boxers) had knocked it over while playing (fell on rt side as when seated). Now it won't even try to turn over! I've check the clutch safety switch with similar results. Could it be in the on\off switch, or starter button? What else should I be looking at?
TIA

Did you check the battery for fluid level? Does the starter click at all?

The battery seems good...horn and all the lights work. It doesn't click when hitting the start switch.

Required to start:
On/off switch = on AND clutch switch = on (lever pulled in) AND key switch = on AND  neutral switch = on (in neutral) OR side stand switch = on (stand retracted).

Oh, start button too!

Just a guess but I'll wager that it's what Paulcet pointed out. Clutch switch could be unplugged.

I tried bi-passing the clutch safety switch and it did the same. I'm going to have a look at the starter solenoid tomorrow.

Hate to mention; Kill Switch.

But, do check the battery closely.  On its side that long you could have lost a lot of electrolyte out the vent tube.  Load testing the battery is a good idea too to rule-out damaged internal connector plate.

Are you starting in neutral with clutch in?  If not, maybe try that?  The side stand switch could have been damaged or misaligned in the fall..  Seems like a possible candidate, and is a quick check.

I jumped the starter solenoid this evening and the starter did turn, so if my thinking is correct that would be the culprit.

Solenoid could be the culprit.  Any of the other things I mentioned above could do it too. You've eliminated the clutch switch, how about the others?

The battery electrolyte looked good and I couldn't see any damaged in in. How would I load test it and test the kill switch?
