Title: rear sprockets
Post by: ILikeSound on October 01, 2010, 12:11:04 PM
Hey all,
I have been searching and I don't seem to be having any luck finding a rear sprocket bigger than 39t but less than 45t. Ideally I would like a 41t or 42t. Anyboby know where I can find one?

Thanks,
Will

why not just go down 1 in the front.

F  : R
16:39 = 1:2.4
16:45 = 1:2.8

15:39 = 1:2.6

1 tooth down in the front equals 3 teeth up in the back

I had a 42 tooth on mine for awhile.  it was listed as a 520 conversion for a katana.  I bought it off ebay

Yeah there's definitely a good chance you could find one from another bike. Just make sure it has the same number of holes and the bolt circle is the same diameter.

Whats sizes would be ideal for you? If we know that then we can do some math and pick out common gear sizes to get close

Ideally I would like to go down 2 in the the front to a 14t and up 2 or 3 in the rear to a 41t or 42t.

Same as a 15/45

I am also just being cheap and trying to avoid buying a new chain. I figured going down 2 in the front and going up 2 or 3 in the rear would allow me to use my current chain which has plenty of life left on it.

You are supposed to replace all 3 (sprockets and chain) at the same time or else they will wear out faster.

Have you checked out www.sprocketspecialists.com? They have a ton of bikes listed and you can cross-reference each bike.

theres a chain length calculator somewhere to determine what setup will fit your stock 110 links.  but you have use the search, cause i dont feel like it right now.  i think a 14-41 would fit, but your prolly gonna have way more torqe then you need or want.  youll be running somewhere around 7,000 rpm at 60 mph.  I think. now im gonna have to go check that right quick.  be ready for a post edit.  :icon_mrgreen:

EDIT: yea i off by a little. with a 14-41 youd be running like 5800 rpm at 60 mph. in 6th gear.

I've got a 14-41 setup if you want.  I paid $20 for the 14T and $60 for the 41T.  I'd sell them both for $60 + shipping if you like.  Send me a message.  I've put about 500-600 miles on them, with a new chain.  The front is a JT sprocket in steel, the rear is from SprocketSpecialists in aluminum.  I can send pictures tomorrow if you like.

gregvhen, I want all the torque I can get. Until about 3 weeks ago I was riding a SV650 that I had to sell so I am trying to up the torque the best I can to somewhat match what I was used to. I need to be able to easily get the front wheel off the ground.

I am now thinking I may just do the front sprocket for now to see how it feels then I will see about getting the rear done.

Spinner, I may be interested but don't hold it for me if you are trying to sell it soon.

Everyone, thanks for all the input.

no wheelies with a 14/45? My old gs I had before my sv had stock 16/39 and I could do wheelies in first gear using the clutch.

i ran this for a month or so too for stunting. but i rode a little more highway than i led myself to beleive so went back to 16/45

this was a good median for stunting and short highway rides

with the 16/45 could you do a wheelie with out the clutch, just rolling on the throttle pretty hard?

I've ran a 12 tooth front, with a 42 tooth rear, and could only barely power wheelie, and had to pull up really hard on the bars.  basically, if you want to power wheelie, you bought the wrong bike :thumb:

no way. forget that. even with th 14/45 i couldnt power wheelie unless i stood on the rear pegs

EDIT: but with the 16/45 clutching up was still easy and made finding the balance point still no problem

yea you did. BUT that said, its much better to learn clutched wheelies anyway. using the clutch to pop up creats a much more predictable launch, and allows for slower speed wheelies. which are cooler, naturally.
