Just got in a set today. Problem is no instructions at all.
Has anyone got instructions or can you send me or post a couple close up photos so I can see how it all goes together?
Post some pics when you get em on please :D
I want to see how they look.
Like this...?

Yeah, I can help you put those on tomorrow if you want.
Cool! I guess you're earning that new right side cover I have :icon_lol:
We'll work out the time tomorrow.
The sets are on ebay by bikeparts79. $235 + p&h.
Fussrastenanlage SUZUKI GS 500 - E
That really is Gimbel selling them. They use DHL postal (40 euros) so if you don't mind it taking a month to get to you. Final total a little under $300. That's how I'm ending up with duplicates and extras - I forgot I ordered something then I find something cooler somewhere else and order that. Soon I'll post a "garage sale" of all the extra belly pans, handle bars, headlight cowlings, tail side plastics, etc. Got in Gimbel belly pan and headlight cowl, but between when I ordered them and got them I found factory originals so that's just part of my story of extra parts.
It came with some documents in German which were stamped and signed. From what I've been seeing, after-market parts sometimes require paperwork showing they are legal. One document was a Suzuki document, then stamped and signed all over just like you see in an old movie. Maybe someone from Europe could sound off on those regulations and paperwork. Some parts I've seen mentioned that no paperwork is required and the parts were street legal (headlight, brake light comes to mind).
centuryghost came over and helped me put them on today. :woohoo: Thanks a million!
Too bad its raining. Oh, well, I'll still go for a short ride to try them out.
never would have met another GS500 owner in my neighborhood if it weren't for this board. (Let's all update our profiles with our LOCATION :icon_idea: )
GS-Triplets! 3 GS500's in my carport as we worked today. So nice - nothing but GS500's! :icon_mrgreen:
Anyone else have experience with Gimbel rear sets? I'd like to hear your tips on getting them on. We had to lower the center stand when UP by putting on a longer bumper - the foot lever part was too high (when up) and got in the way of the left foot between the peg and the shift lever. Also had to use the handy 'ol dremel to shorten the shaft on the brake cylinder. Otherwise, it was smooth even though there were no instructions.

And Junior also got a new fuel cap

Here they are parked safe in the carport away from the rain. You can see the rain at the top of the picture and the wet ground. If you can't ride then tinker with them!

Mister.....
Where did you find that rear cowl?
Those are some nice looking pieces!

I do no think that is his bike. He was just giving an example from another user. I think adidasguy is trying to make some seat cowls though. Look here -

Not the same, but similar to the Gimbel seat. On ebay, Gimbel is seller bikeparts79

I am working on it. Have ordered a few and found a few to decide what to make and give an example to my friend that does plastic and fiberglass fabrication
By the way, NEVER buy from Cowl Tech. Ordered a cowl 10 weeks ago - NOTHING. They are crooks.
You didnt read all the posts on here warning you not to buy from there lol?
Missed it. Somewhere else I remember seeing it suggested so I didn't search here. We all do dumb once in a while.

Ain't that the truth. I do it far more than once in awhile. :icon_confused:
Thanks adidasguy, now I'm getting the itch for some rearsets! :icon_twisted:
I'd prefer the more contoured one that you got pictured in the other post. I might even take a lick at some fiberglass work and try building one. But the white and decal you show is just what I'm looking for. I'll figure out how to modify it for a 500e.

The rearsets look great. Get a chance to ride them yet?
I always love the keyless gas caps too, just never feel like paying for them.
Will those rear sets work on a F model? They only advertise for E.
I have a 92 and an 09. It would fit on the 09. You do have to shorten the shaft on the rear brake master cylinder and deal with the center stand foot lever coming up too high (lengthened the bumper for the center stand so it doesn't swing up as far) but I think the center stand issue would happen with any rear set that moves the pegs back.
It is a different ride. Lots of fun but not my style for a long trip (That's just my preference for riding position). It puts you in a more aggressive position. You must have factory or after market clip on bars. They force you to lean because your feet are back farther. Stock bars are too high so you'd feel like you were arching your back. As you know, I have the factory clip ons and they are perfect for me. Somehow it makes the shifter feel nicer. I don't know why - maybe with the linkage the foot lever travels more? I don't know, but I like it. Brake feels the same.
I'll take a side photo this week like I did in another thread for the difference between the stock bars and the factory clip ons.
I need to add that the combination makes the bike feel smaller, more sporty and more maneuverable. I feel more "at one with the bike". Makes me just want to do twisties and swerves. Just for fun, I swerve around every thing I find in the street rather than just riding straight. My 09 always felt bigger due to the faring, but I think you'd get a cool ride on it with bars and rear sets. The 09 will stay mostly stock however I will take off that crappy stamped steel brake lever and replace it with the older one with the rubber lever.
I was going to put on a Tarozzi set. They advertise for the 89-91 (and we know it is the same through 2010) but there is no way Tarozzi will fit. I've contacted them and still no response. They won't even tell me what bike they did make them for or why they are totally wrong. DON'T BUY TAROZZI for a GS500!. Gimbels are Suzuki approved in Germany and we know they fit. Buy the Gimbels off of ebay from bikeparts79 (it is Gimbel's ebay ID).
I don't mean to be ignorant or rude, but what is the benefit of aftermarket rearsets except for making your wallet $300 lighter and looking really nice and sporty?
do they improve handling in any way?
is shifting easier?
is the grip better?
what about vibrations? aren't they worse than when using stock rubberized pegs?
It's a serious question. I really don't know the answer!
By the way, they really look nice :thumb:
If they were in the same place as the factory pegs, then, yes - they thin your wallet and make your bike prettier. After all, a lot of what we do to our bikes is for appearance.
The Gimbel rear sets move your feet back about 4" and up about 2". That changes your riding position making it more race like. It forces you to lean forward more which is why you need clip-ons rather than the standard bars. In a way it is the opposite of why some people pit on handlebar risers. Or some people raise or lower the rear of the bike. You're changing the position of your hands, body and feet. You do that for a variety of reasons:
* so the bike fits you better. We're not all the same height
* you have hand, back or other injuries and find a different position more comfortable
* you prefer a different riding position (I hate GSXR's - TOO far forward and I hate cruisers - my feet belong below me, not out to the front)
You asked a valid question. One thing I did before I bought my GS500F was to sit on different bikes. The dealer had Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. I really felt at home on the GS500F. Given that, you can modify the bike to change the riding position just like different bikes feel different and one feels better to you than another.
I changed the '92 to be a sportier bike. The 2009 keeps the factory pegs because they are more comfortable for long rides. For tooling around the neighborhood and for having fun, the 92 with the Gimbel rear sets is my preference. I like the feel of the shifter on the Gimbel. I'm not sure why - it moves the same part on the bike. Maybe the added linkage makes for a different feel - I don't know but I like it better.
Overall I feel more a part of the bike with more responsive handling. Maybe because I'm a little closer to the bike because of leaning forward more. Not sure. It is different, It is fun. It is more playful.
For long trips - I'd get tired in that position. But that's just me. Some people prefer the prone position of a GSXR. That's too much for me. What I have seems right for me. That can change as I ride more and more. I have 2 GS500's with different styles and riding positions. I love both. Think of it as sports car ('92 with Gimbel's) for fun and SUV (the 2009 F) for long trips.
To be honest, I took a gamble. I didn't know what they would be like. The first day it was strange. As I learned the feet are back a little, I started to get the feel of the bike. Now I love it. Then I still love my other GS500 with standard pegs.
Glad you asked. Hopefully this helps.
One of the main benefits to new rearsets is ground clearance. Foot pegs are usually the first part of the bike to hit the ground when you lean over, so lifting the pegs higher lets you lean a bike farther. It's a handling vs comfort thing.
Think of it like when you play baseball and your coach tells you to keep your feet shoulder width apart with a slight bend in your knees and elbows with your hands infront of you. It's puts you at more of a 'ready' stance. You could just stand there with your hands to your side and looking around at some butterflies, but if you're there and ready it'll have you ready to react a lot faster.

They definitely look nice but I don't think they make a difference in terms of performance. They look lower, but does that really make a difference in riding position?

They aren't lower, but higher and farther back. They add performance by giving more clearance while turning for racers. By having the pegs higher and farther back, they force the rider into a more prone position.
thanks for thoroughly answering my question. :thumb:
where did you get that chain guard?

I am out by Seatac and have been known to put on a GS500 ride that goes over three mountain passes in one day (370+ miles), CAYUSE PASS SR123> CHINOOK PASS SR410> WHITE PASS US12. It encompasses both sides of the state, I may do it again Memorial Day 2011 when Chinook Pass opens up?

"Route 410 through Chinook Pass has been designated by the U.S. government as the Chinook Scenic Byway. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful routes in the United States. Because the summit is above the treeline, there are many places to park along the road to view the scenery"(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/bc/Chinook_june1.jpg/800px-Chinook_june1.jpg)
Nice pictures. What a great ride!
We'll have to meet up. centuryghost and grommett2k came over last weekend and we went for a ride to Vashon.
I go through your area often when going to RMC or Trader Joes.
We need a Seattle Area GS500 Club. :woohoo:
