Title: '89 Clipons
Post by: JPFL8 on October 14, 2010, 01:53:04 PM
Hey everyone.  So I have been riding my bike for a couple weeks (finally!) and am interested in getting a more aggressive seating position from the bike.  I figure I'll keep the stock bars on until the winter and finish the mod in the cold.  I've checked out the wiki page and such but am still a little confused with which clipons will fit on the F version.

I don't want to mess with the front forks so real clipons are out of the question.  I would like the American '89 clipons as I believe these are the lowest of the manufacture clipons that were put out? But I believe Buddha must bend the bars to make them fit properly?  Also the clipon type 3 from Europe/Canada, do those attach on hassle free?

One last point, with all these manufacturer clipons, Ill need a new top plate, am I correct?

Sidenote: I'm in love with this bike! ...and the twisties!

Please look up messages I've posted in other threads. These are some:

There are 3 types of factory clip-ons. The USA 1989 and the 2 types from the rest of the world through 2001. One type fits on the newer GS500's while the other fits all models. This is due to the angle of the bars and hitting the tank on a hard turn. I do not know if the USA 1989 version fits as I have not had that type. I have both European types. You can see pix of them on my bikes.

What I refer to as the "type 3" fit just fine and is about a 10 minute job to swap them. No bending of anything. The only hassle is removing the bolts that hold on the top plate - the nut underneath is REALLY REALLY REALLY on tight.

If you want the bars out a couple degrees more, you can shim the clips with a washer. On all, from what I've seen, the actual height of your hands would be the same. Type 2 is higher at the top plate but angles down more, hence hand is the same height. I don't know about the USA 1989's as I don't have those.

Combine the type 3's with Gimbel rear sets and you get one awesome ride! I'll be posting pix of the complete bike later. There is a thread regarding the Gimbels:
