Title: Bent Centre Stand
Post by: Aussie GS500F 06 on October 15, 2010, 11:00:05 PM
hey guys I can no longer use my centre stand. the arm that you press down on has bent, and now keeps bending to the point that I'm afraid if I use it it will break off.Has anyone else had this issue.. just seems the pipe that they made this out of has too thin a wall. :cookoo:

For real? Umm do you know a welder? Wow never heard of this one?

Resolution: Find a welder? They might do it real cheap for you. I think maybe you a got a cold weld on that center stand and some how it made it out of the factory?

If you know how to weld it is possible not to melt/weld enough into the metal to make a good metalurgy bound?

Bike breakers sell these really cheap. Just buy another one.

Just a thought: it might have happened because of how you put the bike on the center stand. The lever is just to hold it down. If you press on it hard and rely on it to raise the bike, it will eventually break off. You must use your muscle and lift the bike up and not rely on pushing down on the center stand.

I'm only 5'8" and it was hard for me to lift it they way the book says. The grab rail is just too far back for me to get good leverage. I found that if I grab the frame above where the center stand is (there is a small horizontal piece there) and do a dead lift like at the gym, I can get it up really easy with no chance of it falling over. Also I don't have to press down hard on the center stand lever.

.... Just a thought and a suggestion....

I have never heard of this happening too. They seem like solid little buggers. Has the the bike been dropped or down before? this may have weakened it in  a fall?

Where abouts in Oz are you? Just did a quick google search and there is a wreckers in Perth with a GS500. Might be worth giving it a try?

Maybe it's just the way. I have been putting the bike on the stand. my previous bike you held the stand down with your foot and then rocked the bike back, no lifting required. I know how, and have the tools to fix it but just thought it was a bit strange!  :dunno_black:  Not sure if the bike has been droped, I was told when I bought it that it hasn't. and have no reason to think otherwise.

Thats how I was taught to put bikes on the center stand also - stand very hard on the foot lever while holding the bike steady and lifting a little bit.  Putting bikes on the center stand got much easier after I started doing that.

I don't think I could get my bike up without standing on the foot tab. I want to say I have once or twice when I pulled the bike up by the right side, but I don't have the grab rail on my subframe anymore, so I just have to grab the actual subframe and lift straight up while I push down on the foot bar. Mine's 18 years old though and hasn't broken yet, so maybe yours was just random.

I've always stood heavily on the foot lever and never had a problem. Maybe yours got a little rusty? Or as someone said, might have been a factory fault. If the metal is good and you can weld or know a welder it should be easy to fix.

My gut feeling is that it's a factory fault. The pipe should be able to withstand the force it takes to put the bike on the stand. looks like a job for the weekend

Easy way is to get it welded in situ.

Get underneath, have a look at the pivot bolt and you will see why  :icon_eek: I guess its put together this way for safety. If the nut does come loose and falls off the bolt wont wander out......unless the exhaust falls off first

Mine is bent too. I can use my center stand still but it is unstable because the arm that you stand on has bent down too much. I'm guessing it's just my heavy 290 lb ass standing on it causing it. I'll be taking mine off and trying to bend it back over the winter.

I'll have to take it off, it's bent so much that ill have to replace it with another piece of pipe.

The thing I found is that bending it back made it weaker. and it just bends twice as bad the next time you use it, thats why I'm opting to replace the pipe (arm) with a thicker walled unit.

At least I'm not the only one though!

Sorry to revive an old thread, but my 07 has now developed this problem.
The lever is now bent that it touches the ground when the bike is on the stand. I think it has developed a weakness just below the weld due to rust under the paint.

Has anyone been able to repair their lever?

Thanks for your help.

A good welder/brazier would be able to.... but depending on cost of that. .... a second hand unit online might be just as cost effective?

I think you'll find that the lever that you step on SHOULD be on or only a little above the ground when the bike is on the centrestand.
