Title: Quick carb clean, wouldn't turn over 4k in top gear.
Post by: lilwoody on October 21, 2010, 06:16:06 PM
On my way home from work last night something plugged up something in my fuel system. The bike was sluggish from a stop and would only turn 4K in 6 gear. So I get up this morning and check the vent, that was fine, check the plugs their peachy. So I go to my old tried and turn first step before disassembling the carbs. My redneck carb flush. I already had the tank off so I drain the carbs with the petcock set on pri then close them up. Then grab the good ole can of Gumout and fill the pri line with it. Next pull out the air filter and grab a can of ether and run the bike on the ether for about a minute at idle. I let it sit for a couple hours then drain the carbs again. Put the air filter and the tank back on and sheez-friggin-zam, she purrs like a kitten again. I have done this before to other carbed motors with similar results as long as they aren't too gummed up.
Let the flaming begin.

Gumout has alcohol and acetone in it if I remember. You basically loosened and removed water based dirt and whatever was loose washed itself out.
I guess the vibration, and air flow with ether got the rest of the cleaning done.

The ether step may not be neccesary, just sitting in gumout for 1-2 hours could be all it needs. But, you were in a hurry weren't ya.

Cool.
