My question is - why?

The front brake will be responsible for most of the stopping, so a drum in the rear should be fine. And if you swap out a drum for a disc setup, you will need to fab up a brake stay on the swingarm as well. Just my $.02

"the rear Hub you are searching for is out of the 1976 Yamaha RD250 1A2, German Model. Also some RD 400 in Japan and England had these spoked wheels with disc-brake."

From here..... http://forums.tz350.net/archive/index.php?t-497.html

Good luck  :thumb: looks like you are going to need it. You are not giving much away about the bike and what exactly you are trying to achieve. Its probably easier to take a trip to your nearest breaker, find something that looks like it will fit and then make it happen.

id like to run the rear disc wire to match the front and use vortex rearsets to run the rear brake(hydrolic). i know i can make them work with the drum(will take mods) but want that matching look of discs. ill be doing a cafe style to the bike and hope to do a tz250/350 style rear w/ mono shock after completion. any wire wheel w/ disk i would try to make work, looking for any bike that might offer this even dirt bikes

it is a 1974 air cooled RD350, not a yvps rd350lc.

i think the mid 80's YZ 250's had 18 inch spoke wheel with disc

A friend has a drz400sm that has spokes wheels with disc brakes. Think it's a 17" though. Pretty much any newer dirtbike wheel would work

Just want to cast my vote for using a drum brake in the rear. A rear disc will look more symmetrical, but the drum will be lighter and provide better braking responsiveness than a disc. If you get a modern wire wheel with a disc, the rear disc won't match the front one, so then you'll have to deal with a different problem. There is a good reason why Yamaha switched the (mag wheels) SR500 of 1978 from a rear disc to a rear drum in 1980; that big heavy disc out back was prone to lockup when braking. I've owned both types of SR, and the drum brake in back is flat-out better; it is less sensitive to locking and weighs less than the disc rear wheel, which is a win-win situation.

The Yamaha XS series had a mix of wires and mags; the cheaper versions of the XS360 and the XS400 had wires with drum rear wheels, along with the (enduro / street-dirt legal) XT500. Even better, the XT500 had alloy rims, instead of the chromed steel rims used on the other models, which would help you save even more weight.

If you still want a disc rear wheel, look for wire wheels from the early (PRE-1980) Suzuki GS750 and GS1000 models; Suzuki used both wires and mags on those models. If you decide to go with a drum rear wheel, the GS400 had mags and wires with drum rear brakes, and the GS550 models of that same era were also available with mags and wires, mostly with drums.

Lastly, don't overlook the Kawasaki KZ models; some of the KZ400s and the KZ650 of the middle and late '70's had wire wheels with drum brakes. The bigger KZs (750, 900, 1000) of that era had a mix of wires with disc rear brakes, or mag wheels.

Good luck; I hope you find something suitable. My vote is still for a drum rear wheel, to save weight and provide better braking, but this is your bike and your money.
