Title: New owner with a few questions
Post by: 300lbsgorilla on October 26, 2010, 08:49:56 AM
Hello.  first post here.  Long time rider and experienced in wrenching.

Just got a used '97 GS500E for the wife to ride.  going through it now. Runs good but has the high idle problem like so many seem to. working on that part.  Few other things:

Found an open port on the Carb bank.  It connects the two carbs near the top of the carbs and has a "T" joint open to the air right in the middle.

the "t" is part number 45 in this schematic http://www.bikebandit.com/1997-suzuki-motorcycle-gs500ev-carburetor/o/m6057sch246158

I think this is to the evaporation canister which has been removed before I got the bike.  Can someone confirm this?  Also should the port be open to the air or should it have a nipple covering it. I have seen it both ways on different bikes but now sure what is best here.

The needle jet has an adjustable clip.  Was this type stock or would it be aftermarket needle?

Anything else specific to this bike that I should look out for while I am going through it?  overall it is in great shape with low miles.  It has a few dings and scratches from being a starter bike for a few people and some weathering from being stored outside a some point in its lifetime.

thanks a bunch.

that's the breather tube for the float bowls. it lets air out as fuel goes in. its not connected to anything. normally there's a hose attached to it but the hose is just left open so it doesn't matter if its there or not

Welcome to the forum. Couple of things that might help you out.

There is a FAQ section in the forum that covers a majority of new owners questions

There is a search feature that works pretty good helping you find the topics you are looking for and

There is a Wiki page that also covers a bunch of stuff to include gear reviews.

But as always if all else fails just ask. Good luck!

Adjustable clip on a US bike = aftermarket specifically a DJ needle.
High idle - if it runs fine at all other rpm's and just have high idle - after cleaning and checking for vacuum leaks etc, then you could get it to idle right by switching pilots to the 40 non bleed style. If you dont have it run right (which is almost par for DJ crap) then you got headaches. Worry about it then.
Cool.

Thanks for all the info.  Greatly appreciated.

It runs good but horribly flat in the mid range (needle dominate area).   Dropped the clip to 4th from the top and it improved greatly but still not perfect.  May try last clip position.  Other than that, will have to re-jet.  I was hoping I didn't have to yank the carbs to set it all up.  Looks like the idle mix screws have been opened up so someone has done some work to it.  On other Suzuki's I have had a 1/2 turn open on the idle mix fixed all high idle (non vacuum leak) problems.   Of course just because someone else worked on it doesn't mean they did it right.

So if DJ kits are not all that great on these bikes what is the preferred setup?  yes I know i can find it in the search but since I am positing anyway...

Thanks again.

Instead of DJ, you can just install larger OEM mikuni jets.  Buddha sells them pretty cheap.

007 Thanks.

However my jet pack works literally as a drop in thing ... clean, set em to original spec on canada/england bikes - non epa countries, air screws @3 and put the jets I send you for your setup ... however it needs the original needle. DJ needle wont work with mikuni jet's like I sell. However if you sort out everything, and yes air screws is an option, up to 5 1/2 is fine, and you still have high or slow to return idle, then you need 40 pilots - which also I sell ... but you have to make sure you need it, no sense fixing one problem when another one will show up ... get it to where its all correct except for the hovering idle.

Then try air screws, but you can do pilots at that point. Air screw only affects idle, pilots are for 0-1/8th throttle, AKA normal take off's from a stop.

The confusing thing is, air screw is idle to 2K - I like to idle em a bit higher ... 15-1600 is where I set em. So a 4K idle is usually pilots, not air screw, in any case, you have some sorting out to do before you get either situation.

Cool.

Thank for the info.  Have some other problems to deal with now though.  I didn't change any jet setting or anything else for that matter, and now the bike is a dog.  bogs profusely under load with little acceleration or power, and runs really rough at constant speed.  Idles fine.  I think I have crude in a main jet.  any other ideas?

never mind.  float failure!
