Oh. Well I would definitely make sure to get some good insurance then. Not sure why you came to a GS board for that :dunno_black:
For the record, I like the old one better:

I realize this. That's why we have screennames.
I'm still waiting for op to check in
He did. He added 'lic' after M1 in his post.
OP, I hope you have fun with your GS, sorry I can't help with Canadian insurance info.
Do they have Geico in Canada? Liability <$80 year in U.S. for a '98. Probably more for a 2010, especially if you do full coverage, but still should be pretty cheap.
gtfo geico for nyc is stupid expensive ~700 and i'm not a teenager.
not sure what companies you have up there, but a 21 single male in arizona USA, foremost = 700/year, while progressive was 150/year for basic.
I am in CA and i have state farm. It cost me a little over $500 for the year.

Lol noooooooo. I had to pick up rubbish on the side of the freeway for that.
Americans, avert your eyes, these insurance costs are ridiculous compared to most.
To the OP:
I am 34 with an M1 in London Ontario.
Have had the Gs for 2 years.
Perfect Driving record.
Insurance started at $780/year (Liability only).
Now it is $580/year on my M2.
Add a couple hundred for collision/comp.
For everyone else, Canada uses a graduated licensing system (money-grab):
M1: No night driving, no 400 class highways (100km/h multilane), 0.0 alcohol
M2: No alcohol
M: Standard license

I know there are some states that are doing this with their regular drivers license. normally only applies to teens tho. as for motorcycle licenses, you take the test, get a permit which is similar to the M1- no night driving, no passengers- then you take a road test and get your license.
I'm not sure what insurance is on the GS. it's not registered or insured yet. I pay a little more than $300 a year for my M50 with all the bells and whistles. when I first got it, they quoted me at $180 but I had to pay it all up front. I didn't have the cash to throw down, they said it had to be 300+ for monthly payments. I have towing insurance, rental car insurance, liability, collision and the lowest deductible I could get. I'm also 32 with more than 10 years riding.
I will be paying 1291 /yr >:( with my m1 lic after a full yr of having my lic it will go down to 830/yr .
It sucks because I only paid $3999 for my bike .
I am a 19 year old in GA with 4 speeding tickets and 1 for loud pipes.
My gs was $190 a year.
My gsx-r is $450 a year.
My '90 model civic was $300 a month.
I'm in Nova Scotia, we don't really have a graduated system for bikes, need your bike beginners for 6 mos. to get that you drive in circles for couple minutes....3 to the right, 3 to the left and don't fall over. once you have that your good to go. No riders, no alcohol, and you turn into a pumpkin at dusk. After 6 mos. you can get your full with a simple road test....and i mean simple. Or you can do the course, its two weekends of sat. and sun. 8 to 4. and your full lic. right away. Some insurance companies require the course. Mine didn't. I have a 89 and its 300+/- for public liability for a year. I've had mine for just over a year.
