Title: A Breif Explanation
Post by: Fry on November 04, 2010, 05:15:00 PM
Most of you who know me, know me to be a bit of a "Post/Picture" whore around here so it should come as no surprise that I also have a build thread going on at another site I frequent, ktmtalk.com (http://ktmtalk.com) a site I visit because I ride a KTM300EXC...They seem to enjoy the build up of the GS yet someone new to the thread over there politely asked, why a GS? Stating it was a cool build but seemed like to much cost and effort for a lack luster bike.

During my explanation to him/them I realized that I never mentioned on this site why I'm doing the rebuild. On the surface the rebuild was spurred on by Cosmic Charlie and others on this site, spurred on by not much money but plenty of ideas, spurred on to make something cool out of something that I already owned, yet there is a deeper level that I thought I'd share. I'll copy and paste my responses from that site:

Back in 1995 I was living with my GF (Adie), the day I went to buy a new GSXR1100 she decided to buy this even though she had never ridden a motorcycle. We spent a lot of time riding together yet a few years later I ended up breaking up with her, but always maintained contact with her through Late Night meetings. I sold my Gixxer for a '96 GSXR SRAD 750 (Revolutionary changes at that time), the GS500 bounced around from her, to me owning it, to my dad, to me again.

A few years ago, about the time I started but lost interest in this project, she committed suicide, a big loss for me even though I was no longer dating her or hooking up with her. So, I suppose this inordinate amount of time, detail, and small cash out put that I'm putting into this bike, means a tad more than just coming up with something good looking. My current GF wouldn't understand, but I think I may paint "Adie" on the underside of the tank, so she's always riding with me.

Additionally I am currently Bike-Less and didn't have cash to go out and buy a better bike, thus I had this laying around in parts buckets and decided that for little under $1K, some Yankee ingenuity and hard work, that I could have something neat looking and done myself to my standards.

So yes, tons of work, paying attention to every fine detail, for a bike that doesn't handle well, doesn't go to fast but holds a big space in my subconscious.

So, this build means a tad more than I had let on or even cared to admit.....Thought I'd share even if it makes me look like a "Girlie Man"....

I inherited a CBR 1000 from my step-father who committed suicide, I know where you are coming from. My condolences, and keep up the good work on the build. Make her proud.

I always wondered about that disturbing avatar of yours.
It says a lot even if I don't quite understand the details.
I can appreciate the depth though.

And about your very last sentence. . .
Actually your post shows courage, not a "Girlie Man".

Good luck with the project.

My condolences.  It's good to let it out.  Nothing 'girly' about that.  Don't measure your manhood by someone else's stick.  You go boy.

Some have called that man a "Leader", a "Visionary", others have called him "Crazy" and "Dangerous", guess it's all a matter of perspective.

OKAY for real no joke I made that Avatar for fun. I know who he was and what he did. I was in the era of Patty Hearst and that guy. He was nothing more then a mad man and his followers were nothing more the week minded liars.

Other then that I like the picture LMAO! It's a joke and nothing more.

This is great that this topic has come up. The guy was a head case who lead others to commit murder. Pretty funny.

We may be in the wrong section of the forum but the subject is spot-on.
The human mind and what is considered healthy is deep beyond any "how to lap valve seats" discussion.
Over the last 35 years I have worked in the tavern business (family), and in electrical engineering (my trade).
Both venues are chock full of nut-jobs, odd balls, and weirdos. But none of it comes close to dealing with the real issue, as in a mental health professional.

It's my unprofessional assumption that the problem with crazy people is; they are likewise brilliant, and that is the scary part. Like your friend in the avatar, he wasn't simply destructive, he was powerful.
And come to think of it. . .
This post fits better in "this" particular thread than any nuts & bolts discussion.
BTW: The bike is discussed in detail right here>>> http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=54403.msg613633#msg613633

Many famous people have had Mental Illness, it can affect anyone...

The thing with Good Ole Charlie was that he didn't use his brilliance in a social norm type of way, instead, driven by drugs and his symptoms he choose/was led down a very bad path, the more power he got, the more validation he received. The mind is a immensely powerful thing, some use it's power wisely and constructively, others walk down the dark recesses and pathways and not only peak, but live in the spaces that most conscious people will not go inside, the mind will actually prevent it, for most. Anyways....

Abraham Lincoln
James Taylor
Ludwig van Beethoven
Vincent Van Gogh
Winston Churchill
Virginia Woolf
John Nash
Lionel Aldridge
Jane Pauley
Leo Tolstoy, author
Charles Dickens, English author,
John Keats, poet,
Michelangelo, artist
Bette Midler, entertainer
Charles Schultz, cartoonist
duck Clark, entertainer
Irving Berlin, composer
Rosemary Clooney, singer
Jimmy Piersall, baseball player. Boston Red Sox
Burgess Meredith, actor,
Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky, composer
Charlie Pride, singer
Sylvia Plath, poet and novelist.
Janet Jackson, singer
Patty Duke, actress,
Roseanne Barr, comedian
Marlon Brando, actor
Maurice Bernard, actor
Buzz Aldrin, astronaut
Margot Kidder, Actress
Jonathon Winters, comedian
Pat Conroy, author
Ernest Hemingway, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist,
Tennessee Williams, American playwright

Being somewhat shallow and avoiding the things that make you (us) uncomfortable is indeed a great recipe to simply stroll through much of what life throws at you.
However, there are those amongst us that have the capacity to see much further into their existence than the shallow level most of us usually operate at.

Scholastically I'm ill equipped to carry this much further. Any deeper than what a layperson could derive from a few back issues of Psychology Today magazine is the best I can do. Non-the-less, your thread is fascinating.

If you can transfer said experience & energy into the fabrication of your bike project, then all the better.
Some will love the finished product, and some. . .
well, some will look at it and simply say "your nuts".

Cool thread,

Ej, by the sophistication of your reply, I think you have a far better grasp on Psychology than what you can learn in the mammby pamby Psych Today rag....

All that matters is if I like it...I like feedback, obviously Pos. feedback, but Neg. feedback helps as well.

Erm, sorry if I haven't been keeping up but, here's what I understand

(1) You're doing a cool GS build
(2) You're doing it for personal reasons

Which is all cool  :) Now, is it finished? Where can I find the latest pics?

Dude, it ain't finished, probably won't be for a while if I keep fussing with every stupid little detail....

I whore out way to many pics.....Search my posts, I don't wanna look like I'm posting, just to shamelessly plug my modest GS.
