Well I cant spring for new rear sets (Not yet at least) so I figured I play around with some ideas with the Stk. brackets and heel guards.
Here is the Heel Guard and a scrap piece of perforated steel mesh that I had lying around.

Place mesh over guard, grab some primer and paint on your grid. The reason I'm doing this is to get a good pattern on the parts to use as a reference to drill lighting holes into the item.

So the next step would be to Prick punch the centers of each painted hole. I would then take a drill, not the same size as the hole, about half the size and completely drill through the item/holes. Then I would switch drill bits going up a few sizes and drill only half way down into the previously drilled smaller holes. Yet before going to the point of NO RETURN and drilling these suckers out Im going to step back and re-think things through....
Any thoughts?
I'm all about unique mods and increasing power to weight ratio... but realistically... how much weight reduction are you hoping to achieve here? A few grams for a couple hours of effort? Or is this mostly just for the looks?
You could save at least 2x the weight by switching to lighter riding gear, aluminium bars, lighter and smaller signals, composite headlight housing and plexi cover, plastic/other lighter mirrors, composite gas tank, keyless gas cap, etc etc.
PS: I know it is your time and bike... but it was an obvious question. So i'm just asking and being the ahole that other people are too afraid/politically correct to ask.
I don't mind asshats, didn't really find anything you said offensive though.
I should have made clear that this potential mod isn't for anything other than aesthetics...
As for light weight stuff....I have lighter mirrors going on, lighter levers, lighter grips, aluminum bars, I cut the sub frame off, I ditched the Big Headlight for a lighter smaller one, made a lighter exhaust, got rid of all the rear body work, Ect........The weight savings will be minimal, but again all done with aesthetics in mind, not bettering the bike....

1 cent: That is a LOT of work and if your off even a little bit on the centers it will look like poop.
2 cent: I think drilling the heel guards is a cool idea, but the two support brackets, no so much.
3 cent: If you can pull it off, absolutely no one else will have perforated plate steel rear-sets like that. No one!

#1is why I stopped, not sure I can get them all perfectly aligned, and drilled out....
#1: I don't do much else besides working, eating, and sleeping, so time isn't an issue, the garage is my safe haven...
I may look at other bikes stk. mounts pegs and see if there is better options.
And here's some constructive input...
You could just gut the heel guard leaving behind a frame and spot weld/hot glue (from behind of course) some lightweight aluminium mesh and achieve a similar look and possibly better weight-loss.

That is why I love Enthusiast sites like these, specifically this site and it's members....
Within a few hours of casual posting I was given some great advice, some great visual examples, and to think I wasn't gonna post anything about the peg ideas for fear of ridicule and how the actual project would come out, glad I did now.
I was thinking the exact same thing, and then he hit the nail on the head. It would very well complement what you did with the gaps in the frame too.
I wouldn't really be up for modifying the actual peg brackets. I'm sure they have some strength to give, but I'd still be hesitant to weaken something I put weight on.
I actually the second idea was what you were going for when I started looking at your pictures. I was thinking "if he's going to cut that mesh out like a heel guard, shouldn't the heel guard be on top of it when he paints it??" but then I kept reading. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out when you're done though.
Well I got 1 Heel Guard completed for the most part, it needs a bit of finish work with a ball peen to get it to somewhat buldge ino the opening a tad more. Plus theres still some plastic covering that melted into the holes when welding. Overall though I think it came out OK? All I have to do is cut the other mesh piece out, fit it and weld it in and finish it with a ball peen and a rat tail file.
Though I won't be drilling or modifying the actual Peg Mount brackets, they are made of some pretty thick steel and IMHO would hold up quite well to some lighting holes however I won't be doing that.
I'd like to thank tBolt for his idea and photo shop pics we sent back and forth last night, without him I'd still be scratching my head on what to do.

i did get confused to start with though.. i thought the idea was to drill some holes and add LED's behind the plate ... lighting... not lightening = less weight.....
no no no no no! i am not being the grammar police here! it was just how my head processed it O0 ... a small line of LED with a protected wiring harness behind the plate might look cool though! ... :cheers:
I don't like LED "Accent" Lighting....Not my thing.
I do like, and was going to drill Lightening holes, but went in a another direction.

Looks good! That's what I pictured when I saw you first picture or two.
I'll admit I also thought there was gonna be some business with some lights mounted by the footpegs as well. I thought you were going to try to use the old passenger peg brackets to mount some turn signals or something. Your idea makes a lot more sense though!

Going to a swap meet tomorrow(Today) but should be able to finish the other one off (And better results wise) by tomorrow afternoon. Ill post up bikes....
As for painting, the Foot Peg Mount will be the same color as the rims and side covers (Anthracite/Graphite), the Heel Guards will also be this color however the mesh will be Matte Black like the frame and other mesh components...
I'm pretty much done with the mesh motif, don't have much on the bike now, but don't want it to look gimmicky....I may have to make a tray to cover the bottom of the seat/new sub frame rails, and will have to do it out of Mesh as well, mostly cause I have it on hand and its easy to work with....I may try sheet metal, only time will tell, but other than that I'm done with the mesh......LOL.

Slightly off topic...I really like the Graphite/Anthracite(?) paint you used on your engine. Where can i buy it?
Engine Cases are done with Duplicolor 1200 degree Engine Black, think a flat....
The Grey items on the engine are powder coated....
